There have been some surprises along the way, and none more amazing than the play by Mexico’s Cañeros de Los Mochis. Dropping only two games in the round robin, they are now at the top of the table and are looking like strong contenders for this year’s title.

Another team that has made the most of this home crowd is Venezuela’s Leones del Caracas, who have been completely electric through the tournament, finishing in 2nd place after winning the final game over Colombia’s Vaqueros de Monteria.

Few might have predicted the lackluster performance by either Cuba’s Agricultores or Curaçao’s WildCats KJ74, who both exited the tournament with only one and two wins respectively.

The final round robin games saw Panama’s Federales de Chiriqui and Cuba’s Agricultores face off as a matter of pride, with both teams unable to advance beyond this round. In the event, the Panamanians stamped ten runs on the Cubans as they finished the tournament with a 3-4 record.

Another team who were playing for pride was Curaçao’s WildCats KJ74, who faced a foe who needed a win to keep their hopes alive. The Dominican Republic’s Tigres del Licey would slip out of the semis with a loss and a win by Puerto Rico. Leaving nothing to chance, the Domincans put up a solid win over the WildCats and held that number four spot with a 4-3 finish.

Puerto Rico’s Indios de Mayaguez needed a win and a prayer to have any hope of advancing, and they were really up against it, taking on the wundermannschaft of Mexico’s Cañeros de Los Mochis. The Mexicans have been almost unstoppable in this tournament, but the Puerto Ricans but up a sterling performance, tagging them for nine runs to take the win. It was all for naught, however, as a win by the Dominican team in their game saw the door slam shut on Puerto Rico.

Coming into today, the top three sides were all but guaranteed, as Mexico would be first no matter what outcome, and the second and third spot would go to the winner and loser of the final game. Two teams who have put on a spectacular performance over the last week clashed as Venezuela’s Leones del Caracas met Colombia’s Vaqueros de Monteria in one of the most hair-raising events possible.

Both teams came into the game tied at a 4-2 record and the two neighbors have a deep-rooted rivalry on the line. The 36,000-strong crowd made sure that the visitors felt their presence and the Venezuelans came out of the gates firing, putting up five quick runs in the first three innings.

The Colombians came back with four but a few more late runs made sure of the job and the home crowd got to see their boys get the win.
