Boone defies Yankees history
After defeat to the Blue Jays in the Division Series, Aaron Boone has now overseen eight Yankees seasons without a championship.
Another season has slipped away in frustrating fashion for the New York Yankees, who fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL Division Series, losing the series 3-1. With that, it’s now been 16 years since the Bronx Bombers last hoisted the Commissioner’s Trophy. And, as has become tradition, fans are once again pointing fingers squarely at manager Aaron Boone as the primary reason the team continues to fall short year after year.
Boone took over as Yankees skipper ahead of the 2018 season. Since then, here’s how the team has fared in October:
- 2018: AL Division Series
- 2019: AL Championship Series
- 2020: AL Division Series
- 2021: Wild Card Game
- 2022: AL Championship Series
- 2023: Missed playoffs
- 2024: World Series
- 2025: AL Division Series
A legacy at odds with history
Boone’s tenure stands in stark contrast to the storied legacy of the most successful franchise in Major League Baseball history. Since officially adopting the name “New York Yankees” in 1913, no manager has held the job for five or more seasons without delivering at least one World Series title.
By comparison, here are the managers who etched their names into Yankees lore with championship success:
- Miller Huggins: 1923, 1927, 1928
- Joe McCarthy: 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943
- Bucky Harris: 1947
- Casey Stengel: 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958
- Ralph Houk: 1961, 1962
- Billy Martin: 1977
- Bob Lemon: 1978
- Joe Torre: 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000
- Joe Girardi: 2009
Despite the mounting pressure, Boone remains under contract and has publicly stated he’s calm and confident about returning next season - his ninth at the helm. It’s worth noting that his career winning percentage sits at a solid .584, but in the Bronx, October success is the only true currency.
