Brian Matusz dies at age 37: What was the cause of death of the former Orioles pitcher?

Brian Matusz, former Orioles pitcher, died today, Tuesday, at the age of 37. Matusz played in Baltimore from 2009 to 2016 after being drafted in the fourth overall spot in 2008.

The Orioles announced the player’s passing through a statement. “Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz,” the franchise wrote in a post on X. “A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face. Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”

Brian Matusz pitched in 279 games with the Orioles, starting in 68 of them. He won 27 games and recorded 462 strikeouts. He ended his career with the Cubs, where he played just one game on July 31, 2016, the year they won the championship. Over the course of his career, Matusz pitched to a 4.92 ERA through 528 2/3 innings.

He was born on February 11, 1987, into a family of athletes. His baseball career took off at St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix. In his junior year, 2004, he was named All-State for Arizona. In his senior year, he was named Arizona Player of the Year.

He was initially drafted by the Angels in the fourth round of the 2005 draft but chose to play at the University of San Diego, where he won the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2008.
