The New York pair were responsible for producing all seven runs for the Yankees in the first game of the series against Houston.
Chisholm Jr. and Grisham light up Houston in statement Yankees win
The New York Yankees (77-61) face a brutal stretch against playoff rivals and delivered an emphatic statement by winning the opening game of their series against the Houston Astros (76-63). The Bronx Bombers claimed a 7-1 victory at Daikin Park thanks to long balls from Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham.
The Yankees broke through in the second inning after their top four hitters were shut down in the first. Grisham singled, and Chisholm Jr. drove him in with his 27th home run of the year, a shot to right field.
New York extended the lead in the fifth when Grisham launched a grand slam. The outfielder cleared the bases – Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge – with a 358-foot drive to left-center.
Houston avoids shutout
Houston finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on the corners, Yainer Díaz chopped one toward third. The Yankees tried to turn a double play but only got Christian Walker at second as Carlos Correa crossed the plate.
The Astros had one last chance in the ninth but couldn’t produce a miracle. Díaz singled, only for momentum to fizzle when Ramón Urías struck out against Phil Blackburn. The game ended on a double play after Cam Smith lined straight into the pitcher’s glove, and Blackburn fired to first to double off Díaz, who had broken for second.
