Cincinnati Reds pitcher Caleb Ferguson’s NSFW rant at second base umpire Bill Miller
A disastrous inning in Seattle, including an umpire collision, led to Caleb Ferguson’s viral outburst as the Reds hit a new low.
When Cincinnati Reds pitcher Caleb Ferguson walked off the mound Monday night after a frustrating play, cameras caught him shouting in the direction of second base umpire Bill Miller, his face tight with frustration. Within minutes, lip readers and social media users had zeroed in on what appeared to be an obscenity-laced insult aimed squarely at the veteran umpire.
The clip quickly made the rounds online, with many pointing to Ferguson’s apparent words - “f***ing fat*ss, get out of the way”, as one of the more explicit on-field outbursts of the MLB season.
What led to Caleb Ferguson’s outburst against umpire Bill Miller
The incident occurred during a disastrous seventh inning in the Reds’ 8-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners, but the breaking point came on a single play involving second baseman Edwin Arroyo.
As Arroyo moved to field a ground ball near second, he collided with Miller, who was positioned in the base path. The contact prevented Arroyo from making a play on the ball, allowing the batter to reach and the inning to continue.
The moment visibly shifted the tone on the field. Ferguson, already dealing with a rapidly unraveling inning, reacted immediately after escaping it. Cameras captured him yelling toward Miller as he walked off, punctuating an inning in which nearly everything had gone wrong.
After the game, Ferguson declined to explain the outburst in detail. “You have to ask Bill,” he said, referring questions about the play and the collision to the umpire.
Manager Terry Francona also stopped short of directly criticizing Miller’s positioning but acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. “I don’t ever look up and think where an umpire should be. That’s on them,” Francona said. “It’s discouraging that it happened.”
The play was one of several turning points in the inning, which began with Cincinnati trailing just 1-0 before unraveling completely. Ferguson surrendered a grand slam to Cal Raleigh, his first batter of the frame, and the Mariners continued to capitalize with a string of hits, including one that deflected off Ferguson’s glove. Missed defensive chances and poorly timed contact allowed Seattle to pile up seven runs, turning a close game into a rout. That loss put the Reds at 45-54, and they sit in last place in the National League Central.
But it was the collision at second base, and the outburst that followed, that lingered longest after the final out. It’s been a season filled with frustration for Cincinnati, and that moment seemed to push tensions over the edge.
