Team Mexico is the strongest that they have been in years and will be looking to flex their muscles against Colombia in their WBC opener.

CHRIS CODUTOAFP

It will have the feel of a Freeway Series when Mexico meet Colombia in their WBC opener, as the Dodgers’ Julio Urias will feature in a pitcher’s duel against the Padres’ Nabil Crismatt. The two teams will meet in what is perhaps the stiffest of all groups, Pool C, which includes the USA, Canada, and Great Britain.

Colombia vs Mexico Preview

Team Colombia

While this Colombian side may not be as prodigious as those of years gone by, they are still a powerful sight to behold. Their pitching is first-rate, with Crismatt stepping in for an injured José Quintana, but their bullpen is deep and talented. On the bats, they have Jorge Alfaro and Gio Urshela leading the way, but a lineup of more than capable hitters to step in at any point.

Team Mexico

An early favorite to get out of the group stage, this Mexican side is firing on all cylinders, in perhaps the best shape that any Mexican team has been in for years. Urías leads the charge on the mound, but he has ample support in the bullpen from pitchers like José Urquidy and Taijuan Walker. Mexico’s offense is productive as well, with Randy Arozarena and Alex Verdugo able to put up huge numbers almost at will.

Colombia vs Mexico predicition

On paper, this is a solid matchup that Mexico should win. But only a fool would count Colombia out and they will want to stake their claim to the second round of the tournament as quickly as possible. While the duelling action will be on the mound, with Dodgers and Padres in the forefront, strict pitch counts will mean that neither starter will last much more than three or four innings, leaving the state of their bullpen as the deciding factor. In this, Mexico is the better equipped team. But those Colombian bats are booming and can make the day very uncomfortable for the Mexicans.

Our prediction: Colombia 4 - 5 Mexico in a game that could even squeak into extra innings.
