Disaster at the Yankees, who urgently seek reinforcements
The New York Yankees remain top of the AL East, but have suffered multiple injuries.
The New York Yankees (32–20) remain atop the American League East, ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays (26–26), Boston Red Sox (27–28), Toronto Blue Jays (25–27), and Baltimore Orioles (18–34).
Despite their position at the top, the Yankees are well aware that their roster needs reinforcements with two months remaining before the MLB trade deadline.

The Bronx Bombers have been hit by multiple injuries in recent months—most notably the loss of ace Gerrit Cole, who has been sidelined with an elbow injury since before the season began.
In total, New York has four starting pitchers on the injured list. Potential options to stabilize the rotation include Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt, while Will Warren and Ryan Yarbrough are also being considered to fill the gaps.
According to Bob Nightengale, the Yankees are actively pursuing a right-handed hitter, ideally one who can play third base.
The urgency to fill that position comes after it was confirmed that Venezuelan infielder Oswaldo Cabrera will miss the remainder of the season due to a broken ankle.
For now, fellow Venezuelan Oswald Peraza has taken over third base duties, but the right-handed hitter has struggled offensively, slashing just .172/.243/.328. DJ LeMahieu is another option at third, and the team is also anticipating the return of Jazz Chisholm Jr., a left-handed hitter.
