The Dodgers explode in eighth to take Opening Day win
The 2024 MLB season is off to a running start and while there is a ton to be excited about, there are also some concerns creeping in.
What started as a pitching duel saw some early rot creep in as a pitch clock violation by Yu Darvish gave a foreshadow of things to come. A throwing error by Tyler Wade eventually became the first Dodgers run and then a throwing error by Glasnow allows the Padres to retake the lead.
But the most bizarre of innings was the eight, which began with the fourth pitch clock violation of the day surrendering a walk. Then a single and a walk set up a Kiké Hernandez sacrifice fly ball to tie the game. Again, the pitch clock error would let the Dodgers back in the game. But it didn't stop there.
Gavin Lux hit a ground ball to first in what should have been, would have been in any ordinary universe, an inning ending double play. But this is not an ordinary universe. This is LA Dodgers baseball, where the laws of rationality and physics are out the window. In this universe, the ball went through the webbing of Jake Cronenworth's glove, allowing another run to score and all runners to advance. Two more singles from Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani would seal the Padres' fate.
The strange eighth inning would end just as it began; with an error. Freddie Freeman ripped a long fly ball to right field for Tatis. Shohei had rounded second base and had to run back to first before the throw, something the speedy Ohtani had no trouble doing. Trouble is, he forgot that he had to re-tag second on his way back, allowing the double play to end the inning.
Both teams showed some solid performances. The Dodgers lineup, while not the blasting power that many expected, was able to find the gaps with some nice base hits. There was some good short work by both bullpens and apart from the pitch clock violations by the Padres, they seemed to be in some semblance of order for the start of the season.
And whle the focus of the MLB executives were firmly on the "event" of staging Opening Day in South Korea, the actual baseball was revelatory.
The takeaways are that the Dodgers are as the Dodgers always were: a team that will pounce and make you pay dearly for any mistakes you make. More importantly, they are a team who will find a way, come hell or high water, to win.
And on the other side of the coin, the Padres are a team who are back in contention. They wobbled in the end today, but showed that they are able to stand toe to toe with the Dodgers. The loss of Juan Soto seems to have bothered them not a jot. The NL West is going to be a true scrap and, surely, that is what we all want to see.

The Dodgers will bring on Evan Phillips to try and slam the door shut here.
Gavin Lux the hitter now and the first pitch is in the dirt. Ball one.
Estrada comes up and in with the next pitch and it is 2-0.
A fastball is fouled back and the count is now 2-1. Estrada needs to be careful here. There is nowhere to put him.
Lux hits a fastball on the screws but right at Merrill in center field. He takes it to end the inning, but the Padres are running out of time, going into the bottom of the ninth trailing 5-2

James Outman to the plate now with runners on first and second and one out. He lifts the first pitch to center field but Merrill is there for out number two. It was too shallow for the runners to tag.

Joe Kelly will take over from Daniel Hudson on the mound for the Dodgers.
Freddie Freeman the hitter and he rips a massive shot to right field! Fernando Tatis gets to it and gets the ball in. Betts tags at second but Ohtani had already touched second before going back to first. The throw to second gets Ohtani out, because he was supposed to touch second again before going back to first. That will end the inning, and it ends as bizarrely as it began.
The Dodgers post four runs on the Padres, taking the lead 5-2.

Gavin Lux faces the new pitcher and jumps on the first delivery. It rolls to first and it breaks the webbing of Cronenworth's glove! It dribbles past him and Teoscar Hernández scores on the play! Outman advances to second on the play!

James Outman up now and Brito misses with three straight. The 3-0 delivery misses outside and Outman draws the four pitch walk to load the bases with nobody out.

Heyward lifts a long fly ball to right field. Tatis makes the catch and throws a bullet to the plate. Hernández tags at third and is just in there at the plate! The Dodgers even the score! But wow, was that throw on the money!
Jason Heyward up now and he lifts a very high fly ball to foul territory in right. Tatis looks as if he might have a play on it but it drifts into the netting.
James Outman up now and he rips a hard shot to first. Cronenworth takes it to the bag for out number one. Hernández takes third on the play.

Teoscar Hernández leads off and he chops one to third. A terrible throw from Wade gets past Cronenworth! Hernández takes second base on the error.
Jake Cronenworth check swings a dribbler to first. Freddie Freeman steps on the bag to end the inning. But the Padres draw first blood, leading now 1-0.
Fernando Tatis Jr. goes after three sliders in a row and whiffs them all, striking out swinging.

Xander Bogaerts up now and he drives a lined shot into center field for a single. Wade scores from third and we have our first run of the game and of the season.

Merrill drives a shot to deep center field. Outman is there to make the catch but it is deep enough to move Wade over to third on the tag. Great sac fly!

Jackson Merrill up now and he whiffs at the first pitch before fouling one back and he is in a hole quickly.
Another foul and then Glasnow misses badly with a ball. Wade takes off and is easily in at second base on the wild pitch

Tyler Wade will lead things off for the Padres in the third and he fouls two back before Glasnow misses for ball one. The 1-2 delivery is fouled back and we do it again. Another ball and then another foul and we do the 2-2 once more. Another foul and another ball brings the count full. The payoff delivery misses and that was a great at-bat! Wade got in a hole and worked nine pitches into a leadoff walk.
Max Muncy the hitter now with the bases loaded. Darvish misses outside with ball one. There is action in the Padres bullpen as Darvish delivers a peach of a curve that gets Muncy swinging. The 1-1 is fouled back and it is 1-2.
Darvish goes back to the curve and Muncy fouls it back. The cutter misses inside and it is 2-2. Muncy nearly went, but managed to check his swing.
Darvish misses outside and the count is full with the bases loaded. The payoff delivery is a high fastball that Muncy can't catch up to and Darvish gets out of a jam!

Glasnow's delivery catches the bottom corner but it is called a ball! Wow! That should have ended the inning but instead Profar gets the free pass.
Ha-Seong Kim the hitter now and the crowd give him a standing ovation. He acknowledges them and then gets to work.

Apparently, the reason that Mookie Betts was sent back to first base on that steal was for umpire's interference. The catcher had no chance to throw him out after hitting the umpire's mask on the throw.
Jake Cronenweth up now and he works a 2-2 count before swinging at a nasty cutter for strike three. Glasnow retires them in order.
Fernando Tatis Jr. the hitter and the first pitch is a check swing grounder to first. Freddie Freeman fields it and flips to Glasnow who is covering the base for the second out.

Tyler Glasnow will take the mound for the Dodgers and face Xander Bogaerts leading off for the Padres.
The first delivery is a stinker that skips back to the backstop for ball one. Bogaerts fouls one back and then watches a ball and strike go by. Glasnow bounces another one, way short and the count is full.
The payoff is ripped straight up, nearly hitting the cieling, but ultimately being taken by right fielder Jason Heyward.

Mookie takes off on the 1-1 and easily beats the throw for a stolen base, but for some reason he was sent back to first base by the umpires. The replay clearly shows that it was not fouled by Ohtani, so nobody really knows why he was sent back.
For the first time ever, former team mates Shohei Ohtani and Darvish face each other. One is fouled back and another misses for a ball.
A high fastball fouled back and two more balls lead to a 3-1 count. For the delivery, Darvish takes too long and the season starts with a pitch clock violation!

The Padres have the most vocal fanbase here, likely in solidarity with their countryman Ha-Seong Kim, who plays shortstop for San Diego. While the Dodgers were politely applauded, the Padres received a raucous welcome.
K-Pop star Park Jung-hyun, better known as Lena Park, who was born in America to Korean parents, sings both countries' anthems.
The South Korean anthem, it must be said, is beautiful. I have no idea what she said, but whatever it was, you can really feel it.

It will be a series of new acquisitions as Tyler Glasnow gets the nod today for the Dodgers, with exciting Japanese signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto slated to start tomorrow. Los Angeles picked up Glasnow from Tampa Bay in a December trade and today will mark his second career Opening Day start.
The Padres will turn to Old Faithful Yu Darvish for the fourth time on Opening Day, tapping Joe Musgrove for Game 2 tomorrow. Darvish is coming off a 2023 season that saw him struggle with injury, ending in August, when a stress reaction in his right elbow shut him down. Doctors cleared him for a full offseason program back in November and Darvish has been sharp all spring.

Welcome to the Diario AS USA live commentary of the 2024 Seoul Series as MLB’s Opening Day kicks off in Korea with the Los Angeles Dodgers facing the San Diego Padres from the Gocheok Sky Dome.
For the ninth time ever, the MLB will start their season abroad. This is their first foray into Korea, however, building on the wild success of last year’s World Baseball Classic, and of course Ohtani Mania.
Add to that the runaway success of the Caribbean Series in Miami last month, which provided confirmation, if confirmation was needed, that there is an enormous appetite for top-tier baseball outside of the continental United States.
Long have we dubbed our championship final The World Series, and have justified that by pointing out that the two leagues in the United States are the best leagues, hoovering up all the best players, in the world. And while that is undeniably true, it is time that we let the rest of the world see that baseball in action.
Today, the Padres will be the nominal home team, a situation that will reverse tomorrow for Game 2. Interest has been intense in Korea, with fans from all over the Far East flocking to see their own heroes on the biggest stage.
Kim Ha-seong will be the first Korean to play an MLB game in his home country, while fellow Korean, the great Chan Ho Park, will throw out the first pitch. Park is retired but had a stellar MLB career pitching for the Dodgers, Rangers, Padres, Mets, and Yankees. The first Korean-born MLB player, Park finished his career as the winningest Asian pitcher in MLB history with a 4.36 ERA and 1715 in 1993.0 innings pitched.
Japanese stars Yu Darvish, Yoshinbu Yamamoto, and of course Shohei Ohtani are driving baseball fever in Seoul with crowds mobbing the players everywhere they go. The unveiling of Ohtani’s wife, Japanese basketball star Mamiko Tanaka, on this trip has added fuel to the fire. “It’s been crazy,” said Dodgers outfielder James Outman. “I’m telling you, he’s like Elvis. Everyone screams just getting a glimpse of him.”
With Ohtani and Darvish the two major attractions, it is interesting to note that these two Japanese superstars have never before faced each other in an MLB game, a situation that will end in the bottom of the first inning today.
Another interesting side note is that Xander Bogaerts will be leading off for the Padres today and he is the only player in baseball history to have hit a home run in four different countries. He has hit shots in the US and Canada during normal season play, as well as hitting one in London back in 2019 when he played there with the Red Sox, as well as in Mexico City last year with the Padres. Could he extend that historical record to include South Korea?
