Whether you’re a star athlete, a politician or the next ‘influencer’ to come to the fore, Twitter has certainly established itself as one of the best places to get up to speed on who’s who and what’s what

Derek Jeter joins Twitter...hilariously

On Tuesday, the world of social media was given a surprise when former New York Yankees star and MLB legend Derek Jeter announced his presence on Twitter with a particularly funny first post. Indeed, the legendary shortstop actually retweeted a post from back in 2014 which read, “Derek Jeter has no excuse not to have a Twitter account by now.” Alongside the post were Jeter’s own words which cheekily quipped,”Looks like I’ve officially run out of excuses.” It’s of course a response that comes seven and a half years later.

Though Jeter has in fact arrived to the Twitter party late, he certainly didn’t waste any time getting acquainted with the popular social media platform. Within a few hours Jeter went from revealing the inspiration for one of his childhood hairstyles was none other than famous R&B singer Ralph Tresvant, before going on to retweet welcome tweets from former Yankees teammates such as Alex Rodriguez and CC Sabathia. Jeter even answered to fans directly in a video that he later posted.

Derek Jeter didn’t stop with Twitter

Believe it or not Twitter wasn’t the only platform to welcome Derek Jeter on Tuesday morning. That’s right, the Baseball Hall of Famer and five-time World Series Champion also created an Instagram account on the very same morning. Jeter then proceed to make his first post in which he explained what fans can expect from the account, which is to say content about his nonprofit Turn 2 foundation as well as his domestic life in Miami to name a few subjects. The 47 year old ended the video post by asking a question that many will surely have humorous - to say the least - responses for. “Take it easy on me,” Jeter said. “I’m new to this.”

Why the sudden foray into the world of social media? Who knows, but for a man who relinquished a role in the sport that made him both famous and successful when he left his post as CEO of the Miami Marlins, perhaps it has to do with figuring out how he will spend his increased free time. It also certainly can’t hurt where the promotion of his aforementioned nonprofit organization is concerned. Whatever the case is, he will have plenty of support from 123,000 plus fans who followed him on Twitter on his very first day.
