From touchdowns to homeruns: Travis Kelce joins the MLB ownership ranks: “I have so much love for this city”
Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce joins the Cleveland Guardians ownership group, blending childhood nostalgia with a growing sports business empire.
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s influence on American sports has long extended beyond the football field. Now, the Kansas City Chiefs superstar is officially stepping into a new arena - Major League Baseball ownership.
Travis Kelce: A Cleveland kid returning to his roots
Kelce is joining the ownership group of the Cleveland Guardians as a minority investor, adding another chapter to a rapidly expanding business portfolio that already spans multiple sports and industries.
For Kelce, the move is more than simply a financial investment. It is a return to his roots.
“I have so much love for this city,” Kelce said. “I’m just a kid from the Heights living the dream. I credit every good thing in my life to Cleveland and being raised here with the values and the people and the work ethic.”
The connection runs deep. Kelce grew up in Cleveland Heights, where baseball was part of his identity. Long before becoming one of the NFL’s most dominant tight ends, he was a standout baseball player, once seen as having a legitimate path to the professional league.
He described childhood summers spent downtown, riding the RTA rail with his father and keeping score at games, moments that helped shape his lifelong connection to the city and its baseball culture.
“There was nothing like Cleveland baseball in the ‘90s,” Kelce said. “That’s a core memory for me.”
Kelce’s investment in the Guardians places him among a growing wave of active and former athletes taking equity stakes in professional teams, particularly within MLB. He joins a group that includes athletes such as LeBron James (Boston Red Sox), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Brewers), Cade Cunningham (Texas Rangers), and Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes, who became a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals in 2020.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have a front-row seat to good ownership in my career,” Kelce said. “The best teams prioritize culture. Everyone is there to play their role, and right now I’m here to observe, learn, and support the city when and where I can.”
The Cleveland Guardians, valued at approximately $1.7 billion, have become one of the more stable and upward-trending franchises in MLB following their rebrand from the Indians in 2022 and sustained competitive success in the American League Central.
Unlike a purely strategic investment, this one carries personal weight. Kelce often speaks about Cleveland not just as his hometown, but as the foundation of his identity, a place he describes as shaped by community, competition, and resilience. That sentiment was forged during the 1990s baseball era in Cleveland, when the franchise became a dominant force in the American League and produced iconic players who remain central to the city’s sports history.
“Kenny Lofton, Carlos Baerga, Jim Thome, Sandy Alomar Jr. - the list goes on,” Kelce said. “They poured into this city, and that resonates with me.”
A growing sports empire beyond the field
Kelce’s Guardians stake is the latest addition to a growing portfolio that spans multiple industries, including entertainment, hospitality, consumer brands, and media ventures. Alongside Mahomes, he has also invested in Alpine’s Formula 1 team.
Still, the Guardians deal stands apart, not because of scale, but because of sentiment. It ties one of the NFL’s biggest stars back to the city where his athletic journey began, this time not as a fan in the stands, but as part of the ownership structure shaping its future. And for Kelce, that connection remains the driving force.
“I’m just here to support the team and the city,” he said. “That mentality of Cleveland against the world...it runs deep.”
