The Houston Astros arrived in Philadelphia Monday and were greeted with gray skies and a typical Philadelphia warm welcome. Justin Verlander played along and gave the fans and the media something to talk about before Game 3 was postponed due to rain.

Rain delay and game postponement

The weather forecast for rain in Philadelphia on Monday led MLB officials to postpone Game 3 on Halloween. The game will be played on Tuesday and Games 4 and 5 will be played on Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting. The forecast in Philadelphia for the next three days is partially cloudy Tuesday and sunny with a high near 70ºF on Wednesday and Thursday.

“It’s always a tough call when the current weather might be playable, because you’re relying on a forecast,” commissioner Rob Manfred said. “We waited long enough that we could see what’s coming. We had three, actually four different weather people looking at it, everybody was consistent about this second wave of rain.”

Game 5 on Thursday could be the last game of the World Series if either team wins both games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday’s game will coincide with NFL’s Thursday Night Football game in which teams from Houston and Philadelphia will play each other. The Eagles will play in Houston against the Texans Thursday, which is the sixth time teams from the same city have played each other on the same night as their MLB counterparts.

New schedule and implications for both teams

The new schedule for the rest of the 2022 World Series games is:

  • Game 3: Tuesday (at Philadelphia)
  • Game 4: Wednesday (at Philadelphia)
  • Game 5: Thursday (at Philadelphia)
  • Travel Day: Friday
  • Game 6 (If Necessary): Saturday (at Houston)
  • Game 7 (If Necessary): Sunday (at Houston)

The pitching duel for Monday’s Game 3 was going to be Lance McCullers Jr. for the Astros, while the Phillies were going to start Noah Syndergaard, but that will change now as both teams have an extra day to rest arms. Ranger Suarez will get the call Tuesday for the Phillies and Aaron Nola could get moved up from the Game 5 slot to Game 4 on Wednesday. The Phillies’ pitching ace Zack Wheeler, who got the start in Game 2, could then be on the mound at the start of Game 5.

Although some seem to think this extra day is an advantage for the the Phillies, Astros manager Dusty Baker also sees the bright side: “I think it’s harder to wait around and then turn it off. Because the waiting around to play, I found that sometimes you end up more tired and burn up energy not knowing when and if you’re going to play. So now we know we’re not playing. So now we just treat it as an off day.”

The Astros will stick to their game plan and have Lance McCullers Jr. start Game 3 and Cristian Javier Game 4. Justin Verlander will be on the hill for the Astros in Game 5 on Thursday.
