Injuries have taken a toll, but reinforcements could arrive just in time to boost the Yankees’ momentum.
Giancarlo Stanton’s comeback looms as Yankees eye summer surge
The 2025 MLB season is rolling on, and in the American League East, the New York Yankees (33-20) remain at the top of the standings despite significant injury setbacks in recent months. Manager Aaron Boone has managed to keep the team on track, making key adjustments to maintain their rhythm.
The Bronx Bombers currently hold the edge over their division rivals – the Tampa Bay Rays (27-27), Boston Red Sox (27-29), Toronto Blue Jays (26-27), and Baltimore Orioles (19-35). They’re hoping for a key boost in the coming weeks as injured players make their return, and potentially, as trade deadline reinforcements come into play.
Yankees injury update: Stanton and Chisholm close to returning
Two of the most anticipated comebacks for the Yankees are those of Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton, both of whom could significantly impact the team’s performance on the field.
“Chisholm Jr. could begin minor league rehab games this weekend. Giancarlo Stanton is in Tampa and will be getting at-bats throughout the week,” reported insider Bryan Hoch.
Chisholm Jr. has been out with a right oblique strain, though DJ LeMahieu’s return has helped shore up second base in his absence. Stanton, meanwhile, has yet to appear this season after dealing with soreness in both elbows. He’s currently projected to return in mid-June. In the meantime, Ben Rice has stepped up at the plate, tallying 10 home runs, 22 RBIs, and a .244 average over 47 games.
Elsewhere in the Yankees’ recovery efforts, pitcher Luis Gil is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this week – his first since suffering a lat strain. Fellow pitcher Fernando Cruz, from Puerto Rico, is currently with the team in Anaheim and is expected to throw a bullpen session during the upcoming series against the Dodgers.
