Mexico had a dream night last Sunday.

In what went straight into the history books of Mexican sport, the Mexican baseball team earned a stunning 11-5 victory in Pool C over the United States, a team full of MLB stars, in the World Baseball Classic. And they didn’t stop there.

On Monday, Mexico delivered another victory over Puerto Rico (5-4), putting them in the semifinals against Shohei Ohtani and Japan.

But has Mexico ever won the World Baseball Classic?

El Tri history

There have only been four editions of the World Baseball Classic, and El Tri has attended this tournament since its inception in 2006. And while Baseball is among Mexico’s most popular sports, and the World Baseball Classic is their top international showcase, they have not been one of the teams to win the tournament.

Only three teams have won the Classic, the Dominican Republic in 2013, the United States in 2017, and Japan in multiple years. The Japanese team has been the only nation with multiple WBC titles (2006, 2009) and the most successful. They have had the most wins in WBC play (23) and as the only nation to reach the championship round in all four WBCs.

The United States, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Korea, and the Netherlands are the only other countries with two semifinal appearances before 2023.

In 18 games played up to and including the 2022 edition, Mexico has a record of seven wins and 11 losses.

El Tri now has a date with Team Japan in the World Baseball semi-finals and their hopes are high.
