Japan vs Mexico preview

The Asian team was considered one of the World Baseball Classic’s main favorites and they haven’t disappointed so far.

Shohei Ohtani and co. are looking to win the third WBC title for the country, the first one since 2009. They dominated Pool B with a 4-0 record before defeating Italy 9-3 in Thursday’s quarterfinal at Tokyo Dome.

For Japan, it is the fifth time the nation has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament and is the only team to make the semifinals of every edition of the WBC.

Pool C winner Mexico came back to beat Pool D runner-up Puerto Rico 5-4 in a thrilling quarterfinal Friday at LoanDepot Park.

Trailing 4-2 with two out in the bottom of the seventh against Puerto Rico, the Mexican team managed to tie the game and go ahead on consecutive singles from Isaac Paredes and Luis Urias.

“We thought it would be a great game,” Mexico manager Benji Gil said after the clash. “I wanted everyone in baseball to enjoy that game, and I think it was like that.”

“Japan is a great team as well with huge stars. We know the stars that play in the United States, but they also have great stars playing in Japan. Our rival is the favorite again in the remaining games, but we don’t fear that. This has nothing to do with the favorite”, Gil added.

Japan vs Mexico: prediction

Mexico has been one of the standout teams of the 2023 World Baseball Classic, getting to the event’s semifinal for the first time. They have very little to lose at this stage of the competition, which makes them even more dangerous.

However, Japan, who will be playing their first game out of Asia, have a very complete roster and decisive players like Roki Sasaki, Munetaka Murakami, and, obviously, the Los Angeles Angels superstar Shoei Ohtani. Mexico may put Japan in trouble, but expect the Asian side to come out on top.
