How did the Rockies spoil the Yankees’ Old Timers Day celebration?
The Colorado team avoided being swept by the New Yorkers by beating them on the afternoon in which they honored the best baseball players of the past.
The New York Yankees celebrated their legends on Old Timers Day, but the Colorado Rockies overshadowed the party by beating them 9-2 at Yankee Stadium.
Ryan McMahon lined a powerful line to left field off Will Warren’s pitch in the first inning, and Ezequiel Tomar powered in from second to put the first run on the board. Nolan Jones added to Colorado’s lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Michael Toglia’s homer.
The Rockies had a great batting rally in the third inning and added four more runs. Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke the tie by driving in the Yankees' first run with a double in the bottom of the same inning. Alex Verdugo got his 11th homer of the year with a bases-empty shot in the fifth.
Mark Leiter, who relieved Warren from the fourth inning, gave up one more run in the fifth on a Toglia homer. The Colorado first baseman recorded his 21st home run of the year by hitting the ball over the center of Yankee Stadium.
The visiting team continued to punish the New York pitchers, and Jake Cave hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning. The Rockies outfielder hit a Michael Tonkin fastball very hard, so he and Toglia stepped on the pentagon.

Alex Verdugo, Ben Rice, and Trent Grisham were the last three outs of the game with which the Rockies avoided the sweep.
The first one went with a direct line drive to McMahon’s glove.
The second said farewell with a strikeout, courtesy of closer Anthony Molina, while the last one received his third chocolate of the afternoon.
