Israel vs Puerto Rico: The lay of the land

Israel is likeable but are they good?

Appearing in their second WBC, Israel definitely endeared themselves to baseball fans in the last tournament. In Seoul, not only did they progress from the group, but they beat the highly favored Cubans before losing to the Netherlands and Japan and ultimately finishing 6th overall. Here and now, they’re fresh off an impressive comeback win against Nicaragua, which is to say expectations are high. As was the case last time, the team is largely made up of Jewish Americans, the legendary Shlomo Lipetz the only Israeli born player at 44-years-old. Of course, there are other solid players in the lineup such as major league starting pitcher in Dean Kremer and Red Sox reliever Richard Bleier. Truth be told this is a team that has talent, it’s simply a question of whether they can deliver.

Puerto Rico looks to roll on

Having won their first game 9-1 against Venezuela, it’s clear the Puerto Ricans aren’t playing around. Truth be told, Puerto Rico has been one of the better teams across every edition of the WBC. Indeed, the team finished second in the last two tournaments and are poised to make a deep run once again. With a roster made up of primarily MLB players, this team is no joke, but it’s worth noting that they aren’t as strong as they have been in their last two WBC editions. There is also the major blow they received with the absence of Carlos Correa - his wife is due to give birth. Yet, they do have Francisco Lindor, Javier Báez and Kiké Hernández, so keep an eye on this team.
