MLB: How the ABS system is changing the game for elite pitchers

The ABS system reshapes the art behind the plate and opens a new tactical gap. Exaggerated framing can now trigger pointless reviews from opponents.

Baseball has always been a game of details. A slight flick of the wrist, a lower stance, or a step forward can change the outcome of an at-bat. For decades, the catcher was a silent illusionist, capable of convincing the umpire that a borderline pitch was a strike with the smallest, almost imperceptible movement. That craft, refined over years, set the best apart behind the plate.

Technology hasn’t eliminated that art, but it has transformed it. In MLB, the introduction of the automated ball-strike system, known as ABS, has changed the logic of deception. It’s no longer just about persuading the umpire, but about manipulating the hitter’s perception.

A cynical frame

In the past, framing had to be subtle. An exaggerated movement exposed the catcher’s intent and could backfire. Now, the landscape is different. With instant review available, every offensive player has a tool to challenge a call, and that’s where a new gray area emerges, one that the smartest catchers are beginning to explore.

The trick lies in making the framing obvious, but only when the pitch is actually in the strike zone. An exaggerated movement can plant doubt in the hitter’s mind. If they hear a called strike, they may assume the umpire was fooled by the visual trick rather than the true path of the ball. That suspicion can push them to request a review.

Each team starts with two challenges per game. If the challenge is successful, they keep it; if not, they lose it. Within that limited margin, strategy takes shape. Forcing an opponent to waste challenges on correct calls can be just as valuable as stealing a base.

The catcher, then, is no longer just a defender or a guide for the pitching staff. He becomes a psychological strategist. The elite won’t be those who best hide deception, but those who know exactly when to reveal it. Baseball, true to its nature, doesn’t eliminate mind games with technological change. It simply reinvents them.
