The race to close out the 2025 MLB season is boiling over. One of the fiercest battles is in the National League West, where the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are neck and neck in the hunt for the division title. As of Sunday, both teams sit at 74–57.

The Dodgers managed to salvage the final game of the weekend series at Petco Park, cruising to an 8–2 win on Sunday after dropping the first two (2–1 and 5–1) to the Padres.

From the very first inning, the tension was clear. Shohei Ohtani opened the scoring after Teoscar Hernández’s sacrifice fly brought him home against Padres starter Nick Pivetta.

On the mound for Los Angeles, Yoshinobu Yamamoto kept the Padres quiet early on, but in the bottom of the third Elías Díaz flipped the scoreboard with a two-run homer to left-center (105.3 mph; 413 feet), driving in Jake Cronenworth for a 2–1 San Diego lead.

Freddie Freeman tied it in the sixth with a solo shot (107.2 mph; 415 feet) to straightaway center, breathing life back into the Dodgers.

In the seventh, with Pivetta out and Jeremiah Estrada taking the mound, LA’s bats erupted. Max Muncy blasted a three-run homer (104.6 mph; 387 feet) to left-center, scoring Andy Pages and Michael Conforto for a 5–2 lead.

The nightmare inning continued for San Diego. Wandy Peralta replaced Estrada but couldn’t stop the bleeding, as Freeman smashed his second homer of the afternoon – a two-run drive (97.9 mph; 349 feet) over right field that also scored Mookie Betts, stretching the margin to 7–2.

Ohtani put the final stamp on the win in the ninth, crushing his 45th homer of the season (108.9 mph; 409 feet) to make it 8–2.
