The economic crisis in Venezuela compelled him to seek opportunities in Mexico. Thanks to a recommendation from his friend Gabriel Cañonez, Suárez joined the Triángulo Rojo de Seibaplaya in the Liga Estatal Campechana.

His remarkable performances caught the attention of the Saraperos de Saltillo in the Mexican Baseball League, who invited him to their preseason camp. After a brief stint with the Mineros de Nueva Rosita, he returned to Saltillo and showcased a dazzling 97 mph fastball, closing the season with a 5-0 record, a stunning 1.71 ERA, and 23 saves in 43 appearances.

Robert Suárez’s journey from adversity to MLB stardom

Suárez’s success in Mexico opened the door to Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), where he signed with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in 2015. However, his rise to prominence was far from smooth. In 2017, while representing Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, he suffered a severe elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for the entire season. To make ends meet during his rehabilitation, Suárez returned to working as a supermarket security guard.

A remarkable comeback

In 2018, Suárez returned to the mound, showcasing his resilience. After three seasons with the Hawks, he joined the Hanshin Tigers, where he solidified his reputation as an elite closer by racking up 67 saves in just two years. His stellar performance in Japan finally caught the attention of Major League Baseball scouts.

Major League breakthrough

Suárez made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 2022 at the age of 31. While his first outing was rocky—giving up three runs without recording an out—he rebounded impressively. By the end of the season, he boasted a 2.27 ERA across 45 appearances, a performance that earned him a five-year, $46 million contract with the franchise.

Standout 2025 season

Fast forward to 2025, and Suárez is having an exceptional season. As of today, the Padres hold the best record in Major League Baseball at 17-7. Suárez has emerged as a dominant closer, securing 10 saves in 11 appearances without allowing a single run. He boasts a minuscule WHIP of 0.45 across 11 innings pitched, with 13 strikeouts to his name.
