Yankees have picture perfect Opening Day, beating Giants 5-0

Yankees have picture perfect Opening Day, beating Giants 5-0

The pitching today was outstanding both ways today, with Gerritt Cole setting a new franchise record with 11 strikeouts, the most by any Yankee on Opening Day ever.

His counterpart for San Francisco, Logan Webb was every bit as good, matching Cole almost pitch for pitch, setting his own franchise strikeout record with 12.

The real difference came not on the mound but at the plate. Two big blasts by Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres accounting for the first three runs being the only blemishes on an otherwise solid start by Webb.

The Giants never could quite get their bats working and in the end, that was the true gap between these two teams today.

Another takeaway was Anthony Volpe. He had a so-so day with the bat, but he showed plate discipline and that the situation wasn't to big for him. He never got rattled and while he struck out once, he also worked a walk. Tack onto that a stolen base and the offensive debut of Volpe was a success.

But where he really shone was with the glove. He made some true big-league plays at short and covered a fair bit of ground out there. The Yankees have every reason to feel good about which direction he is headed in.

The new rules for this season didn't get involved in any of the play other than a single pitch clock violation in the ninth, which turned out to be inconsequential. There was one unpopular balk call, but when you look at the replay, it was the correct call.

The Giants were having trouble with their Pitch com system, with several pitchers complaining that they couldn't hear it. Whether that was some sort of workaround that they were trying out to get around the pitch timer or not remains to be seen, but plate umpire Laz Diaz was willing to accept it today and in the end there was no change to the outcome of the game because of it.

The Yankees got their season off on the right foot with a win at home in front of a sold-out crowd, and while it is too early in the season to make anything of it, that is certainly a good way to warm into summer.

Final score, Yankees 5, Giants 0

Starting Pitchers

San Francisco Giants: RHP Logan Webb
Logan Webb will get the start for San Francisco for the second consecutive Opening Day. Webb finished last season with a 2.90 ERA and is known for having one of the best sinkers in the game. Look for lots of ground balls out of the Yankees, especially in the early going.

New York Yankees: RHP Gerrit Cole
Gerrit Cole gets the nod for the fourth Opening Day start in a row for the Yankees. The 2022 season saw Cole throw for a 3.50 ERA while striking out 257 batters, the most in the league, to eclipse “Louisiana Lightning” Ron Guidry’s franchise record. Durable and precise, Cole can go deep into any game, throwing over 200 innings last season.

Jeffrey May

The Yankees are stronger than ever and are looking forward to a competitive season. They managed to keep their talisman Aaron Judge in pinstripes, while also re-signing Anthony Rizzo and poaching starting pitcher Carlos Rodon from the Giants. There is genuine excitement over Anthony Volpe at short stop and the tentative vibe is that they feel that he could be a young Derek Jeter in the making.

Jeffrey May

The Giants have a much-improved lineup on last season’s roster which missed out on the playoffs by a late season collapse. In the off-season, the managed to pick up Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger as well as re-signing Joc Pederson. Despite the heavy blow of losing Carlos Correa after concerns over his medical caused him to pull out of the deal, they have enough talent to make a run at the post season in 2023.

Jeffrey May

Both of these teams will want to get off on the right foot and make their case for a winning season. The Yankees are perennial powerhouses, but have been knocked out of the playoffs in three of the last five seasons by the Houston Astros. A few key moves are what the Yankees are hoping will set that right.
