The USA vs Great Britain is a rivalry that has deep roots; in music, language, pop culture, and now… baseball.
While the Americans are the reigning and defending champions, featuring a lineup chock full of MLB superstars, Great Britain is the underdog in this story. Not quite the Cinderella team in the way that the Czech Republic is, Great Britain were at something of a disadvantage coming into the competition.
Two of their biggest names, Blake Taylor and Jazz Chisholm are not on the roster, dealing the Brits a heavy blow. However, they still managed to outscore every other team in the qualifying round against some stiff competition, largely thanks to some stellar play by Anfernee Seymour and Harry Ford, two of the top MLB prospects in the world.

USA vs Great Britain Preview
Team USA
Adam Wainwright will get the start for Team USA, and while he is battling injury, the strict pitch count will work in his favor. The British bats are pretty solid and it is not beyond their ability to put a run or two on the board early, so he will rely on the offense of Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, and the rest of the lineup to give him a cushion to work from.
The USA are possibly the best team in the world, certainly a cut above Great Britain, at least on paper, so they should be able to manage this game nicely. But make no mistake, they will be made to work for every run and every out.
Team GB
The starter hasn’t yet been named by Team GB, but with the WBC’s pitch count rules in play, the game will swing on the relievers, and they have Ian Gibaut to lean on in that respect. The Brits will not be looking for their pitching to keep a clean sheet, even if that were possible, against the USA, but rather to keep them within touching distance, because the heavy lifting by this team will be done with the bats.
The highest-scoring team in all qualifications last year, they have two prodigiously productive bats in Anfernee Seymour and Harry Ford. While Seymour outscored all hitters in Regensburg, Germany during the qualifying stage, Ford is a first round pick by the Mariners and hit .274 in A ball last season.
USA vs Great Britain predicition
This is definitely the most difficult pool in the competition, with Mexico, Canada, and Colombia rounding out the competition, so whoever gets through this group will have already gone a long way toward getting to the final. Realistically, Great Britain is the weakest of the five teams, but they are also a side that is known for surprising you. They went into the Regensberg, Germany qualifying games as the weakest and blasted past all opposition, so it would be churlish to discount them now.
Our prediction: USA 6 - 3 Great Britain in a game that will be frustratingly tight for the Americans.
