The Chicago White Sox will not have a lottery pick in the 2025 MLB Draft due to specific rules outlined in Major League Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement. This regulation states that teams contributing to revenue sharing are ineligible for lottery picks in consecutive years.

Since the White Sox secured the number 5 pick in the 2024 draft, they are automatically excluded from the lottery for the 2025 draft.

What are revenue-sharing rules in the MLB?

Major League Baseball has a revenue-sharing system designed to promote competitive balance among its teams. The rules consist on local revenue sharing, national revenue sharing, redistributive measures and luxury tax.

This particular rule aims at preventing teams from consistently benefiting from high draft positions. It also encourages teams to improve their performance rather than relying on top draft picks year after year. Additionally, teams that receive revenue sharing money are barred from having lottery picks in three consecutive years. This further ensures that the draft system promotes fairness and competitiveness across all teams.

As a result of these regulations, the White Sox will have the first pick of the second round in the 2025 draft, regardless of the lottery outcomes. This situation slightly improves the odds for other teams, such as the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins, who have the best chances of securing the No. 1 pick.
