Toronto Update:

The atmosphere at the Rogers Centre was one of total celebration on Monday when the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 4-1 to achieve a new franchise record with 11 consecutive home wins. With a sold-out stadium and a playoff-like atmosphere, the Canadian team reaffirmed its dominance at home and consolidated its lead in the American League East with a 59-41 record.

The victory not only extends Toronto’s lead over New York to four games in the AL East in the MLB, but also confirms the solid vein of form that John Schneider‘s team are enjoying having already swept aside the Yankees in their last visit to Canada at the beginning of July and has made their stadium a fortress.

Bichette and Gausman, the protagonists

The decisive moment came in the fifth inning when Bo Bichette hit a two-run double that sent the 41,786 fans in attendance into a frenzy. Three at-bats later, Myles Straw singled in Bichette, and an errant play by shortstop Anthony Volpe allowed Leo Jimenez to reach first base and Straw to score the fourth run.

Bichette, who came into the game hitting .394 with runners in scoring position, raised his average to .400 in those situations, cementing himself as one of the most reliable pieces of the Canadian offense.

On the mound, Kevin Gausman turned in one of his best outings of the year, pitching 7 innings, allowing just 4 hits, 1 earned run (a solo home run by Giancarlo Stanton), 2 walks and 8 strikeouts, with 61 of his 86 pitches in the strike zone. Overall, Gausman has allowed just 2 earned runs in 12 innings against the Yankees this month, posting a 2.25 ERA in those games.

The bullpen, featuring Brendon Little, Yariel Rodríguez and Jeff Hoffman, maintained control in the final two innings to seal the victory.

Volpe and Rodón, on the bitter side

Shortstop Anthony Volpe had a forgettable fifth inning. First, his errant throw after Straw’s single turned a routine play into two extra bases for the center fielder. Then, a poor assist to first allowed Jiménez to reach base and Straw to reach the plate unchallenged.

As for Yankees starter Carlos Rodón (10-7) suffered his seventh loss of the season, allowing 4 runs (2 earned), with 6 hits and 5 walks in just five innings.

A fortress called the Rogers Centre

The Blue Jays’ home dominance has been impressive. With this victory, they reached 11 consecutive home wins, the longest streak in franchise history. During this streak, they’ve defeated rivals such as the Yankees, Giants, and Angels, with a remarkable run differential and a playoff-like atmosphere in the stands.

These are the results that compose the winning home streak:

  • 4-1 vs Yankees
  • 8-6 vs Giants
  • 6-3 vs Giants
  • 4-0 vs Giants
  • 3-2 vs Angels
  • 4-3 vs Angels
  • 4-3 vs Angels
  • 8-5 vs Yankees
  • 11-9 vs Yankees
  • 12-5 vs Yankees
  • 5-4 vs Yankees

The series against New York represents a clear opportunity to take off at the top of the AL East and take advantage of a possible direct seed in the postseason.

What’s next: Scherzer vs Schlittler

For the second game of the series, scheduled for Tuesday, the Blue Jays will send veteran Max Scherzer (1-0) to the mound. Opposing him will be Cam Schlittler (1-0) for the Yankees, who will face a test of fire against a scorching offense and a devoted fan base.
