Yankees hit with double injury blow as Aaron Judge handed surgery update

The Yankees captain had scans to check his elbow, with two key teammates facing uncertain recoveries before Opening Day.

AL BELLO
Estados Unidos Update:

New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge has avoided surgery on his right elbow after suffering a flexor tendon injury last July that limited his performance in the outfield. Meanwhile, shortstop Anthony Volpe and left-hander Carlos Rodón have undergone surgeries that cast doubt on their availability for Opening Day.

Manager Aaron Boone explained that an MRI showed no need for surgery. “He’ll take some time off and continue strengthening and rehab exercises,” Boone said. “But it seems he finished the season in good shape, as we kept seeing steady improvement from him.”

Judge led MLB with a .331 batting average, 1.144 OPS, and 9.7 WAR, adding 53 home runs and 114 RBIs. During the postseason, he hit .500 with one homer and seven RBIs.

Volpe underwent surgery last Tuesday performed by Dr. Christopher Ahmad to repair the labrum in his left shoulder. Rodón, for his part, had Dr. Neal ElAttrache operate on Wednesday to remove loose bodies from his left elbow and smooth out a bone spur.

Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton confirmed he won’t need surgery on his elbows, which had sidelined him for part of the season with the Bronx Bombers.
