Yankees vs Red Sox: MLB playoff rivalry reignited

The 2025 MLB regular season is over, and the American League playoffs will open with a classic. The New York Yankees will host the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card round – another chapter in one of baseball’s fiercest rivalries.

Yankees vs Red Sox is set

The Yankees finished with the same record as the Toronto Blue Jays, 94-68, after beating the Baltimore Orioles in their final regular season game. But tiebreakers favored Toronto, meaning New York missed out on a bye to the AL Division Series.

During the regular season series, Boston dominated the Bronx Bombers. The two sides met 13 times and the Red Sox won nine. Historically, they have clashed five times in the postseason, with Boston taking three of those series. The most recent was the 2021 Wild Card, which Boston won. They also squared off in the ALDS in 2018 and for the pennant in 1999, 2003 and 2004.

Should either advance, the Yankees or Red Sox will run straight into the Blue Jays in the ALDS. Toronto claimed the top seed in the American League and look like the team to beat.
