2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup format explained: group phase, rounds, and elimination
The 19th edition of the tournament gets underway on Friday and 32 teams will be looking to lift the trophy and become world champions.
32 teams and only one trophy. The race to become the basketball world champions starts on Friday 25 August, with Team USA being tipped as the favorites to win the FIBA 2023 World Cup.
The Americans, led by the Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, will try to win the title for a record sixth time, overtaking the former Yugoslavia national team, which also won the event on five occasions.
France will be looking to get to the podium for a third consecutive time, while squads like Canada, Australia, Slovenia, Spain, or Serbia will also be looking to get as far as possible.
FIBA 2023 World Cup: group phase and elimination games
The 32 teams competing in the Word Cup will be divided into eight groups of four teams each.
The best two teams from each section will advance to the second round, which will also be played in a group stage format, as they will be divided into four groups of four teams each.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
From then on, the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will be played in a single-game eliminator format.
