Update:

The 2026 NBA Finals are heading back to San Antonio for Game 5, but the atmosphere inside the arena may look nothing like a traditional home game for the Spurs.

After the Knicks’ stunning 29-point comeback in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden, a result that pushed the series to 3–1, the already high energy around this matchup has increased dramatically. What was already a high-demand ticket has now become one of the most sought-after events in sports, with championship implications driving both prices and travel.

A Knicks takeover in Texas?

According to TickPick data, nearly half of ticket purchases are coming from New York and New Jersey, compared to just 12% from Texas.

That’s a dramatic swing from earlier in the series. For Games 1 and 2 in San Antonio, Texas buyers made up at least 41% of sales, while Knicks-region buyers were significantly lower.

The Knicks are one win away from their first title since 1973, and fans know this could be the moment. That urgency is translating into travel demand, with flight prices reportedly starting around $1,300 and hotel rates skyrocketing nearly 1,000% year-over-year.

And while Game 5 tickets in San Antonio are expensive, starting around $1,700 and climbing sharply after Game 4, they’re still significantly cheaper than Madison Square Garden, where Finals tickets reached well over $4,000 just to get in. For diehard Knicks fans, flying to Texas is, paradoxically, the more affordable option.

Plus, New York’s massive population and global fan base simply travel well. That’s been evident throughout the playoffs, and now it’s peaking at the biggest possible moment.

The cost of a closeout game

The stakes are reflected in the resale market. Ticket prices jumped roughly 20% immediately after the Knicks’ Game 4 comeback, and premium seating has gone to extremes, with some courtside listings reaching eye-popping figures. Even on the lower end, fans are paying over $1,300 just to get in the building.

That surge creates a secondary effect. It can price out local fans. When tickets reach those levels, they often shift toward wealthier, more mobile buyers, many of whom are traveling from out of state.

San Antonio has long been known for one of the most loyal home crowds in the NBA. But Game 5 presents a unique challenge. If Knicks fans show up in the numbers the data suggests, the Spurs could be playing a near-neutral, or even hostile, environment in their own building. That’s not unprecedented in modern sports, especially in high-demand events with active resale markets. But it’s rare at this scale, and rarer still in the NBA Finals.

New York is already buzzing, with fans and celebrities packing Madison Square Garden throughout the series. Now, that energy appears to be traveling. Whether it turns into a full “takeover” or simply a strong Knicks presence, the crowd in San Antonio will be unlike anything the Spurs have seen all season.
