Estados Unidos Update:

Despite the NBA being immersed in international expansion, the league has confirmed that, once again, a regular season game will be staged next season at the Arena Ciudad de México for the fourth consecutive year. This tradition has been ongoing since 2014 with the COVID-19 pandemic puting the game on hold for a couple of seasons. Dallas Mavericks will be one of the participating teams for the 15th regular season game in Mexico.

The Mavs are a frequent visitor to the Mexican capital. The Texans will play their fourth official game in Mexico City, following their experiences in 1997, 2017, and 2019. In the first, they fell 108-106 to the Houston Rockets in a duel between Charles Barkley and Michael Finley at the Palacio de los Deportes.

They didn’t return until 20 years later, at the dawn of Dirk Nowitzki’s career, when he scored 18 points to defeat Devin Booker’s Phoenix Suns, who scored 39 points that night at the Arena CDMX. It took almost three years for the franchise, then led by Mark Cuban, to return to the Azcapotzalco borough; Now, with Luka Doncic in charge, the Detroit Pistons of Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin won 122-111 to the delight of the fans, who enjoyed a triple-double from the Slovenian (41+11+12).

The Mavs’ fourth appearance in Mexico could bring the first pick of the 2025 NBA Draft to Latin America with the arrival of Cooper Flagg, the 18-year-old sensation, one of the most anticipated prospects of recent times.

The Duke forward will be the most prized jewel of the Draft that will take place on June 25 at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn. The Mavericks were graced by the lottery and obtained the right to make the first overall selection, despite enjoying 1% probability, given their final record in the 2024-2025 season. Flagg has all the potential to reverse the negative impact that the controversial and surreal trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers had on the Texas franchise in February 2025.
