Facts about Stephen Curry you probably don’t know

Even those who don’t follow the NBA know the name - Stephen Curry, one of the most famous and greatest players in the league. Here’s what you may not know.

Jennifer Bubel
Update:

Stephen Curry is one of the best active players in the NBA right now and high on the list of greatest players of all time. You probably know that he has won three NBA championships, has two MVP titles, four All-NBA 1st Team selections, and seven All-Stars. He is the three-pointt king and the reason three-pointers became so important in the league. But who is Steph Curry? We know Steph Curry the player. As he and the Warriors take on the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, let’s find out a little bit more about Steph Curry the person.

He is a popcorn addict who judges the stadium snack throughout the league.

Stephen Curry loves popcorn, and he’s a tough critic of the snack. He has a ranking of the best and worst popcorn in all of the NBA stadiums. He rates them on a scale of 0-5 based on freshness, saltiness, crunchiness, butter, and presentation. The best popcorn in the league, according to Curry, can be found at the Dallas Mavericks stadium, the American Airlines Center. The worst is the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers stadium, Staples Center.

He loves golf.

Curry is an avid golfer, always making time to play during the NBA offseason. He says that he would have been a professional golfer had he not chosen basketball. He even says that golf has helped him improve in basketball too, thanks to the mental focus and fine motor skills required to play golf. He has even played golf with President Barack Obama.

He was in a Burger King commercial as a child.

Curry is the son of another famous basketball player, Dell Curry. Aside from the advantage of learning basketball from the greats and getting into games for free, Curry also had the perk of starring in TV commercials. When he was a young child, he was in a Burger King commercial with his dad. In it, his dad asks him what he wants to be when he grows up. His answer, of course: “A basketball player”

His favorite player as a kid was Muggsy Bogues.

Curry wasn’t always the accomplished superstar he is today. In fact, growing up, he was a bit of an underdog. Even out of high school, he was only offered scholarships from three small schools. The greatest shooter in the league and one of the best players ever was drafted just 7th overall in the NBA Draft. So, growing up, he was inspired by Muggsy Bogues, the shortest player in the history of the NBA. At 5′3″, Bogues had no trouble blowing past his opponents, and led the Charlotte Hornets to three playoffs.

His name is not actually Stephen.

Okay, his name is Stephen - but not his first name. Curry was named after his father, so his full name is Wardell Stephen Curry II. In the NBA, his father was known as Dell Curry. His son, of course is known as Stephen or Steph Curry throughout the league, which makes things a lot less confusing when talking about the two together.

He dropped Nike for Under Armour when they messed up big time

Curry used to wear Nike shoes, and it was in 2013 that the brand pitched him a contract. This should have been an easy sell considering Curry was already with the company. But Nike managed to screw that up royally. Their first mistake was pronouncing his name wrong, like “Steph-on”. Their second and even more embarrassing (and careless) mistake was presenting a PowerPoint with Kevin Durant’s name, rather than changing it to represent Curry. Perhaps the straw that broke the camel’s back was that Nike didn’t give Curry a Nike-sponsored camp, presumably thinking he would remain a second-tier athlete. Curry switched to Under Armour and I’ll bet Nike has some serious regrets.

His mouthguards are expensive…for fans

Anyone who’s ever watched a Warriors game has seen Steph Curry chewing on his mouthguard. It’s a signature look for him at this point. What you may not know is that you can actually buy those mouthguards, for a small fee. A used Steph Curry mouth guard will cost you upwards of a few thousand dollars. The most expensive one, his 2018 Game 4 Finals mouthguard - was valued at $25,000.
