Giannis Antetokounmpo reveals NBA retirement plans
The Milwaukee Bucks front office is doing everything they can to keep the two-time NBA MVP with the team going forward.
As the start of the 2025/26 NBA season draws near, the future of Giannis Antetokounmpo remains the top priority in Milwaukee.
The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player is under contract for the next two seasons but has not ruled out a move away from the Bucks. Should he push for a trade, it would be very difficult for the team to resist if a sizable offer comes in for him.
Antetokounmpo is about to enter his 13th season with the Bucks and will not enter free agency until the summer of 2027. He certainly has no immediate plans to leave the league but he has revealed that he wants to return to Greece to play out the final years of his career.
“I’m 30 years old, I can play in the NBA until I’m 36-38. I’d like to end my career in a Greek team, why not?” he said, according to BasketNews. “I don’t want to live in the United States. As soon as I leave the NBA, I want to return to Greece.
“I could end my career here, whether this team is called Filathlitikos, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, or Aris, I’m talking about all the teams now.”
Last week he admitted that he had thought about a move away, but insisted that it’s normal during the offseason. The Bucks have not been past the first round of the playoffs in any of the past three seasons and Antetokounmpo has hinted that he might be open to a move to a more competitive team.
“It’s temptation. That starts when the season ends until the season begins,” Antetokounmpo said. “There’s going to be a lot of people that are going to approach me or approach my agent and they’re going to say this is a possibility, that’s a possibility ... but at the end of the day, ultimately, I’m going to make a decision.”
