Why haven’t the Lakers made LeBron James an offer yet? What it means for the Warriors rumors
With no Lakers deal in place, LeBron James’ future is unclear, and the Golden State Warriors are emerging as a real possibility

With NBA free agency set to open this Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, one of the biggest questions in the league right now is about why one of the greatest players of all time still doesn’t have a deal.
LeBron James, 20-plus-year veteran and face of the Los Angeles Lakers, has still not received a contract offer from the team. And that has been the driving force behind nonstop rumors of a potential move to the Golden State Warriors.
The Warriors are attempting to trade with the Wizards for Anthony Davis and then sign free agent LeBron James, per Yahoo Sports' @KevinOConnor.

Sources say Golden State hope adding Davis would help lure LeBron from the Lakers once free agency opens on June 30.

The idea of LeBron joining forces with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green sounds more like a fantasy scenario than a realistic plan. But the circumstances surrounding LeBron’s current situation suggest it may not be as far-fetched as it seems.
Why hasn’t an offer from the Lakers come for LeBron yet?
The lack of a reported offer from the Lakers is unusual, even when accounting for the complexities of free agency. LeBron has remained productive deep into his career, averaging over 20 points per game last season while continuing to function as a primary playmaker.
But this offseason appears different. There are growing indications that if LeBron wants to continue playing, he may need to do so on a significantly smaller contract than in previous years. Reports suggest the mid-level exception, worth roughly $15 million annually, could be in play. That would mark a dramatic shift for LeBron, who has consistently commanded max or near-max deals.
At the same time, LeBron’s longtime agent, Rich Paul, has indicated that multiple teams have expressed interest. That has opened the door for alternative scenarios.
Why the Warriors keep coming up
This is where Golden State enters the picture. According to multiple reports, the Warriors are exploring the possibility of trading for Anthony Davis while also positioning themselves to pursue LeBron in free agency. The idea is to reunite LeBron with Davis, pair them with Curry and Green, and make one last championship push with a veteran core.
There are real basketball reasons why this works. LeBron and Curry showed strong chemistry during their time together with Team USA, and both have publicly praised how naturally their games fit. Golden State’s system, built on ball movement and spacing, could also maximize LeBron’s playmaking at this stage of his career.

But just as important is timing. For the Warriors, Stephen Curry is still playing at an elite level, but the championship window is narrowing. After swinging big for Jimmy Butler, who is now recovering from a torn ACL, Golden State appears willing to explore even more aggressive moves to stay in contention.
But even if the fit makes sense, pulling it off is another story. For one, a deal involving Anthony Davis would be complicated. His current team has signaled no desire to move him, and any trade would likely require multiple assets and possibly a third team. On top of that, Davis is eligible for a massive contract extension, which makes negotiations even more difficult.
Then there’s LeBron himself. Leaving the Lakers would be a significant decision, both professionally and personally. While the team’s lack of a reported offer raises questions, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee a split. Free agency situations involving players of LeBron’s caliber can evolve quickly, especially as teams finalize their cap situations.
Is this real, or just offseason noise?
The Warriors have been linked to big-name stars before and haven’t always been able to close the deal. That alone is enough to warrant skepticism. But this situation feels slightly different because it’s not just about Golden State’s interest. It’s about LeBron’s uncertainty.
If the Lakers situation remains unresolved and no clear long-term deal emerges, the possibility of a short-term move to a contender becomes more realistic. And few teams can offer a combination of star power, system fit, and championship upside like the Warriors.
