Top NBA free agents 2026: LeBron, Duren headline explosive market
Potential moves involving LeBron James to the Golden State Warriors and Jalen Duren to the Sacramento Kings are shaking up the market.

With just hours to go before free agency officially opens, the NBA market has turned into a full-blown shooting gallery of news. Rumors are flying, and each report seems to trigger a new domino effect. Between superstars, All-Stars, and young players poised to shape the league’s future, several franchises are preparing moves that could completely reshape the NBA landscape. These are the ten names expected to define the summer.
1. LeBron James
As always when LeBron James hits the market, everything revolves around him. While the Los Angeles Lakers remain the most likely destination, Golden State has emerged strongly in recent hours.
According to Shams Charania, the Warriors are exploring a scenario that would involve trading Jimmy Butler and draft picks for Anthony Davis, then signing the NBA’s all-time leading scorer using the mid-level exception.
Yossi Gozlan adds that the plan remains viable even after Kristaps Porziņģis signed a new deal. To pull it off, Golden State would need several things to happen: De’Anthony Melton declining his player option (already done), re-signing Draymond Green at a lower salary, moving Moses Moody, and completing the Davis trade.

2. Jalen Duren
One of the biggest names on the market. The 22-year-old center, a restricted free agent, is far from reaching an agreement with the Detroit Pistons and is already working with his camp to secure a move via sign-and-trade, according to Sam Amick.
The Sacramento Kings have gained the most momentum as a destination. Chris Haynes reports that Duren plans to meet with the franchise as soon as the market opens to structure a deal.

There’s also a key twist. Domantas Sabonis reportedly wants out of Sacramento, opening the door to a major frontcourt overhaul and making Duren their top target.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers are monitoring the situation closely. They are expected to contact Duren once free agency begins, though any deal would also require a sign-and-trade, as Detroit can match any offer.
3. James Harden
There’s no mystery here. James Harden is declining his $42.3 million player option to negotiate a long-term deal, this time with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The move makes sense. After trading away Darius Garland, Cleveland can’t afford to lose Harden for nothing, giving the veteran guard strong leverage in negotiations.
4. Norman Powell
Norman Powell enters free agency after the best season of his career. The Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, and Miami Heat are among the teams interested. Grant Afseth lists Chicago as a leading contender, while Jake Fischer suggests a possible sign-and-trade involving Miami.

His continuity alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo appears unlikely. Brian Windhorst notes that Miami lacks the cap space to offer a competitive deal unless Powell accepts a significant pay cut.
5. Peyton Watson
Peyton Watson was expected to be a major storyline this summer, but his restricted free agency and recent moves by the Denver Nuggets have reduced uncertainty.
According to Marc Stein, Denver is actively exploring trades to improve the roster but remains confident about re-signing Watson. The team could even move players like Cameron Johnson or Christian Braun to create the necessary cap space.

Still, there is interest. Dave McMenamin reports that the Lakers have already done due diligence on Watson, along with other restricted free agents such as Jalen Duren, Walker Kessler, and Tari Eason.
6. Walker Kessler
Walker Kessler may be in one of the most delicate situations on the market. According to Tony Jones, he plans to meet with multiple teams once free agency opens.
The issue goes beyond money. Sam Amick reports that his relationship with the Utah Jazz has deteriorated after last summer’s lack of an extension offer and how his current contract situation has been handled.
Adding to the tension, Tim MacMahon reports that Kessler turned down an extension worth nearly $140 million, believing he’s worth more.

Still, Utah holds leverage as a restricted free agent team. If Kessler wants out, a sign-and-trade could be the likely solution. The Lakers remain one of the teams closely monitoring the situation.
7. Rui Hachimura
Rui Hachimura has emerged as another notable name. The Japanese forward appears to have lost importance within the Lakers’ plans, and several teams are ready to capitalize. Marc Stein and Jake Fischer point to the Brooklyn Nets and San Antonio Spurs as leading suitors.

Meanwhile, the Lakers’ top priority remains signing a center—reportedly at the request of Luka Dončić. The team also wants to retain Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard, making Hachimura one of the most likely departures.
8. Mitchell Robinson
Mitchell Robinson is expected to be one of the most sought-after big men. His future with the New York Knicks is uncertain, largely because the franchise wants to avoid exceeding the second tax apron. According to Marc Stein, the Nets are looking to exploit that situation and lure him across town.

The Lakers are also serious contenders, though Robinson hasn’t ruled out staying in New York if a deal can be reached.
9. Marcus Smart
All signs pointed to Marcus Smart changing teams this summer. After a bounce-back season, he declined his $5.4 million player option and is seeking a long-term deal.

The Houston Rockets have emerged as the frontrunner. Dan Woike highlights the connection with coach Ime Udoka from their time in Boston.
The Lakers will try to keep him, but momentum is clearly trending toward a departure.
10. Draymond Green
With Draymond Green, the key question isn’t so much where, but how much. He has declined his $27.7 million player option to become a free agent, though he’s expected to remain with Golden State.

Brian Windhorst interprets the move as a willingness to take a pay cut to give the Warriors flexibility. The goal is to create room for a blockbuster scenario, signing LeBron James and trading for Anthony Davis.
