OKC will take on the Houston Rockets on the Opening Night of the 2025/26 NBA season, with the ring ceremony set for pregame.
The Oklahoma City Thunder will kick-start the 2025/26 NBA season on home court on Tuesday, taking on the Houston Rockets in a game with real resonance.
Not only will the Thunder be taking on former superstar Kevin Durant, Tuesday’s Opening Night game will also be a celebration of the team’s first title. The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in seven games to clinch the 2024/25 NBA championship and that triumph will be commemorated with the raising of a championship banner at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.
Tuesday’s game will also see the championship rings handed out to the victorious Thunder players. Speaking on Monday reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said that he was excited to receive his ring.
“I can’t wait. Just to have the official piece of hardware I dreamed about for so many years in my childhood and growing up,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “Should be fun tomorrow.”
The Thunder ring features 14-karat white and yellow gold, with blue and orange sapphires in team colors. Each player’s number is inscribed with diamonds and the ring opens up to reveal another ring inside.
How much does a championship ring cost?
Full details of the Oklahoma City Thunder championship ring have not yet been released but a look at previous iterations gives a good idea of how much these typically cost.
The 2023/24 champion Boston Celtics received rings featuring 15 carats of white diamonds and a sea of emerald-cut diamonds, designed and created by the illustrious jeweler Jason of Beverly Hills.
“We collaborated closely with the Celtics ownership on the ring design. The Celtics had 17 championships before last season, which means they’ve had 17 championship rings before us. We all wanted to make sure the 18th was the best and most memorable,” explained CEO Jason Arasheben.
TalkSport estimates that each ring will have cost around $40,000, putting it in-line with the Kansas City Chief’s Super Bowl rings from the same year. The NBA covers the cost of championship rings, a courtesy that is not typically afforded in other sports. In the NHL and the MLB, for example, the teams themselves must foot the jeweler’s bill, often running to millions of dollars.
