There is no doubt that the biggest news in the NBA at the moment is the move of Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets to the Dallas Mavericks. The trade took place days before the deadline on Feb. 9 as the Nets scrambled to get the best deal for their big-name player while they still could.

Why the rush? Well, the 30-year-old would have joined free agency in the summer, when Brooklyn could no longer leverage his star power to acquire fresh talent.

Kyrie Irving’s contract with the Brooklyn Nets

Irving signed a four-year, $136 million guaranteed contract with the Nets in 2019, which is set to expire at the end of this season. This came out to an average salary of approximately $34 million per year. Last year, he picked up his $37 million player option for the 2022-23 season, thus fulfilling his four-year commitment to the team.

Kyrie Irving’s lost income

The controversial point guard lost some of his earnings in the past couple of years due to his beliefs. In 2021, the unvaccinated player was not able to play in home games  because New York City required proof of covid-19 vaccination to enter indoor gyms. League rules state that players who failed to comply with such requirements would not be paid for games they missed.

Last year, Irving was suspended without pay for posting a link to an anti-semitic work on social media, then refusing to apologize for it. He was required to fulfill some conditions to be able to return to the court, including apologizing for promoting the film, and making a $500,000 donation to anti-hate causes.
