Sixers surge into LeBron’s inner circle as free‑agency race tightens
LeBron James’ free agency remains unresolved, but the Philadelphia 76ers are beginning to gain ground in the race to land the four-time NBA champion.

LeBron James’ future is still the biggest storyline of the NBA offseason, and the picture is finally starting to sharpen. While the 41‑year‑old superstar hasn’t made a decision yet, conversations between his camp and interested teams are progressing — and one franchise just made a major leap.
Philadelphia has officially entered the race in a meaningful way. According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, James is taking the 76ers’ free‑agency pitch “really seriously,” placing them alongside Cleveland and Miami in the top tier of contenders.
Philadelphia becomes a real threat
For months, the Sixers have been searching for another superstar to pair with Joel Embiid. Their aggressive offseason — highlighted by the blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown — appears to have caught LeBron’s attention. Charania noted that within 24 hours of the Brown deal, James’ camp began viewing Philadelphia as a serious landing spot.

"I look at it, when I talk to teams now, as kind of a hierarchy of Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia."pic.twitter.com/MNT7JSKSBa
That move instantly reshaped the Sixers’ outlook, giving them a core of Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Brown, and rookie VJ Edgecombe — a group strong enough to make Philly one of the East’s most compelling destinations for a veteran chasing one last title run.
A three‑team hierarchy
Charania now describes the race as a “hierarchy” led by:
- Cleveland
- Miami
- Philadelphia
Golden State, once seen as a major contender, has slipped to the periphery — especially after their hopes of pairing LeBron with Anthony Davis stalled.
Decision still weeks away
Despite Philadelphia’s momentum, the finish line isn’t close. Multiple reports suggest LeBron’s decision could take days or even weeks, as teams continue presenting their cases to his agent, Rich Paul. James himself is not expected to take meetings directly.
Cleveland remains a strong possibility, especially after Donovan Mitchell’s massive extension and his openness to a reunion. Miami is still firmly in the mix. And Golden State hasn’t fully faded, given the allure of teaming up with Stephen Curry.

Philly’s dream is alive
For the Sixers, this is uncharted territory — and a legitimate shot at landing one of the biggest free‑agent signings in modern NBA history. Their pitch is resonating, their roster is stacked, and their window is wide open.
The race for LeBron has its finalists. And Philadelphia just proved it belongs in that group.
