If there is any comfort in the reports surrounding the Lakers legend’s current condition, it’s that he does not appear to be in any mortal danger, which is very much something that family, friends, and fans can be thankful for.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar breaks hip after fall

According to reports, former Los Angeles Lakers star and NBA legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, has been hospitalized after falling and breaking his hip. It is understood that Abdul-Jabbar was attending a concert when the accident occurred. Though his representative Deborah Morales, declined to give any details about the 76-year-old’s present condition, she did stress that he is “deeply grateful for the support he received from the Los Angeles Fire Department at the scene of the incident and the “incredible medical team and doctors at UCLA Hospital, who are taking very good care of him.”

What else do we know about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s situation?

Not much to be honest, but we do know that the 6-time NBA champion who celebrates his 77th birthday on April 16th next year, was quickly transported by emergency medical services from the location at which he fell - it was not disclosed where he was - to the hospital. As per reports, Abdul-Jabbar is currently in hospital though again, no further information has been given about his condition. Given who he is and the nature of what happened, one can imagine that there has already been an outpouring of support from around the basketball world, including another former Lakers star, Pau Gasol. You can see his message below:

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was special

As we all know, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is one of the best and greatest players in NBA history. A man of principles and one who was always interested in improving social discourse, he was actually born Lew Alcindor before converting to Islam, at which point he changed his name to the one we know today. Interestingly, Kareem managed to win an NBA championship ring with the Milwaukee Bucks (1970-71) before joining the Lakers in 1975. As we know, what came next was the stuff of legends as the 7 ft 2 star joined forces with the likes of Pat Riley and Magic Johnson to deliver five NBA championships to the city of Los Angeles.

It was a golden era for basketball and one which was epitomized in the rivalry with the Boston Celtics. Indeed, it was the era in which ‘Showtime’ came to the fore which made the NBA a globally recognizable brand/competition. For clarity, it’s worth noting that after winning Rookie of the Year (1969-70), Kareem would go on to win 6 championship rings, play in 10 NBA Finals as well as 19 All-Star games, and win league MVP on six occasions and the Finals MVP on two.
