Knicks watch party at Madison Square Garden is back on after NYPD revokes ban for Game 1

For one night, Knicks fans will once again have a place to gather outside Madison Square Garden.

The NYPD has lifted its ban on outdoor watch parties at Plaza 33 for Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night, reversing a decision that had shut down the popular fan gatherings during the Eastern Conference Finals. An MSG spokesperson confirmed that the arena applied for and was granted the necessary permits to host the watch party.

But the approval comes with a major caveat. It’s only for Game 1. The status of future watch parties remains uncertain.

Why the ban on MSG watch parties happened

The initial crackdown came after a series of increasingly chaotic scenes during the Knicks’ Eastern Conference Finals run. Police cited crowd control issues, arrests, and safety concerns as the primary reasons for pulling support.

In the days leading up to the ban, watch parties outside the Garden drew massive crowds that spilled into surrounding streets. Authorities reported multiple arrests tied to disorderly conduct, and incidents escalated beyond typical fan celebrations.

One particularly alarming episode involved a fan being assaulted and slashed during a watch party near the arena, demonstrating the risks posed by the swelling, loosely controlled crowds.

Following those developments, the NYPD announced it would no longer support outdoor watch parties outside Madison Square Garden, effectively shutting down Plaza 33 for the remainder of the conference finals.

Now, with the Knicks in the NBA Finals for the first time in decades, the city appears willing to try again, carefully. The decision to approve a permit for Game 1 suggests a more controlled approach, likely with increased security measures and closer coordination between MSG and law enforcement. Still, officials have made no commitments beyond Wednesday night.

For Knicks fans, the return of Plaza 33, even temporarily, is significant. The outdoor watch parties had become a defining part of the team’s playoff run, transforming Midtown Manhattan into a sea of blue and orange and recreating the atmosphere of a home game for those without tickets inside.

Whether that tradition continues beyond Game 1 will likely depend on how Wednesday night unfolds. For now, at least, the Garden is reopening on the outside.
