The Los Angeles team can’t negotiate until August, but already have three contract options on the table for their Slovenian star.
LA Lakers lay out Luka Doncic contract options
The Los Angeles Lakers face a hectic offseason as they rebuild their roster around Luka Doncic, who has emerged as the franchise’s new cornerstone. One of their top priorities is locking in the 26-year-old Slovenian guard on a long-term deal. However, because Doncic only joined the Purple and Gold in February, the team must wait until August 2 before they are allowed to reach an agreement.
Several extension options for Doncic
According to ESPN, the Lakers are prepared to offer Doncic three possible contract extensions this summer. The first would be a three-year deal worth $160 million, available once the NBA Finals conclude. The second is the full maximum extension allowed: four years and $229 million, starting at $51 million annually, but without a player option to test free agency.
Still, the most likely scenario is that Doncic opts for the third alternative – a three-year, $165 million deal that includes a player option in the third year. This structure would give him both security and flexibility: a chance to remain in LA while retaining the opportunity to renegotiate in his third season, aiming to recover the $345 million he forfeited by being traded from the Mavericks.
If Doncic signs a three-year extension, he will surpass the 10-season mark in the NBA, making him eligible for a supermax contract. What’s clear is that both Dončić and the Lakers are aligned in their vision for him to become the team’s next great figure – both in the short term and long term.
As a result, the upcoming negotiations are expected to go smoothly, allowing the franchise to shift its focus to returning to title contention.
