Update:

As the 2025–26 NBA season barrels toward its climax, one of the most talked-about stories in sports this week isn’t about triple-doubles or shiny new Nike shoes.

It’s about the upcoming Super Bowl and specifically, the halftime show that has stirred conversation across sports and entertainment communities. Central to the buzz is, as well as the advertisements, Puerto Rican global superstar Bad Bunny, who is set to headline the halftime performance at the event held early next February in Santa Clara, California.

After a dominant Lakers win in late January, Los Angeles star Luka Doncic was asked a question that seemed almost out of place at first glance, but perfectly captured how the worlds of sport and pop culture increasingly collide. A reporter asked the Slovenian forward what he made of Bad Bunny getting the biggest musical platform in American sport.

“I listen to him a lot so I can’t wait to see him”

Doncic didn’t hesitate. With a smile and genuine enthusiasm, he made it clear he’s looking forward to the show. “I think it’s really good. I’m really looking forward to seeing him mainly because it’s him. I listen to him a lot so I can’t wait to see him.” the Lakers star said.

What makes this moment especially interesting given the broader context of Bad Bunny’s selection. The Puerto Rican artist has been at the centre of what is arguably racially motivated criticism since the NFL announced him as the halftime headliner.

Normal people see his booking as a celebration of the cultural diversity that makes the United States what it is, as well as global music trends (given he’s one of the most popular artists in the world). Meanwhile, critics such as Donald Trump have framed it as controversial, as they have nothing better to do with their lives.
