After the first 13 games of the 2022-23 NBA season, the Los Angeles Lakers have not had their best performance and present a 3-10 record. Despite this poor showing, their popularity in the United States has not declined.

According to a study carried out by Sidelines, the Lakers are the most popular sports team in the United States, followed by the Golden State Warriors and the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball.

The Sidelines study analyzed teams in the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, and NHL based on the number of social media followers, mentions, engagement rate, and average attendance at the games. Each team received a rating on a scale of 10 and the total indicated the popularity rating.

Based on this, the Lakers received a score of 30 to take the top position due to having 20.5 million followers on Instagram, and the hashtag #Lakers being used more than seven million times. In addition, they are the NBA franchise with the third highest attendance in the league.

The Warriors were close to the Lakers with a score of 29.55. Stephen Curry’s team has the most followers on Instagram with 26.3 million users. For their part, the Yankees ranked third with a total of 28.67 thanks to being the MLB team with the second highest attendance and a high fan participation rate with an average of 145,000 reactions on their posts.

The rest of the top 10

The last seven positions in the classification made by Sidelines are occupied, in order, by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Francisco 49ers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Phillies, the New England Patriots, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals.

According to the study, the Dodgers are the MLB team that receives the most fans at its stadium. The place of honor in the NFL belongs to the Cowboys.
