Mavs consider a new role for 18-year-old superstar Cooper Flagg
Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd admitted that he’s not yet decided where Flagg should play.
The Dallas Mavericks begin the 2025/26 NBA season against the San Antonio Spurs next Wednesday.
The Mavs have had a very busy year, with the shock trade of Luka Doncic and the arrival of Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. There has been a lot for head coach Jason Kidd to consider over the offseason but he has not yet made one big decision regarding the 18-year-old superstar.
Flagg was considered one of the most promising college prospects in years when he led the Duke Blue Devils to the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. He played as a small forward for most of his sole college season but Flagg has been deployed as a point guard during preseason with the Mavericks. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kidd admitted that still hadn’t decided on Flagg’s best position.
“There’s a lot of good, positive stories here, and so we have some time to make a decision,” Kidd said of Flagg’s performance as point guard.
“I think he has done an incredible job of handling the situation of running the team. And the other thing that I think that is going unnoticed is that his teammates enjoy him running the team.”
Flagg’s move to point guard would allow the Mavericks to field a plus-sized starting five, alongside Klay Thompson (6′7″), P. J. Washington (6′10″), Anthony Davis (6′10″) and Dereck Lively II (7′1″). Flagg admitted that he still has work to do to acclimatize to the new position in the NBA but he was happy with the progress made from these early outings.
“Just continuing to get comfortable,” Flagg said. “I made some mental lapses today, time and score situations. Got to know [and] be aware of what’s on the clock at all times. Just got to stay more attached [defensively]. Can’t let a hot player keep getting looks. So some of those things you can definitely clean up.”
