Not good enough for the NBA? Mac McClung 3-time slam dunk champ, is now the all-time leading scorer in G League history
Three-time dunk champ Mac McClung sets G League scoring record after a 59-point night for the Windy City Bulls, but his NBA future remains uncertain.

High-flying guard Mac McClung, already a three-time Slam Dunk Contest champion, is now officially the all-time leading scorer in the NBA G League, further cementing his legacy as one of the most dominant players the league has ever seen.
Mac McClung’s record-breaking night
Playing for the Windy City Bulls, the G League affiliate of the Chicago Bulls, McClung delivered a historic performance on Tuesday, with 59 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds.
That near-60-point explosion pushed him past Renaldo Major (5,299 points), making McClung the G League’s all-time scoring leader across the Tip-Off Tournament, regular season, and playoffs. The NBA G League confirmed the milestone shortly after the game.

McClung’s resume in the G league is elite. He boasts a G League MVP, Rookie of the Year, G League champion, and multiple All-G League First Team selections. And yet, despite all of that success, sustained opportunities in the NBA have been limited.
Since going undrafted in 2021, McClung has had brief stints with multiple teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, and Indiana Pacers, mostly on short-term or two-way contracts. Even now, he remains on a two-way deal with Chicago, splitting time between the NBA and G League.
While his NBA minutes have been limited, McClung has become a fan favorite. He burst into mainstream attention by winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2023, and hasn’t lost since. Three straight titles have turned him into one of the most recognizable dunkers of his generation, drawing comparisons to past contest legends and bringing renewed energy to the event.

So… what’s missing at the NBA level?
But how can a player dominate so much in the G League and still struggle to stick in the NBA? The answer likely comes down to a mix of factors - size and defensive limitations at the NBA level, the difference between being a high-usage scorer versus a role player, and roster constraints that favor versatility over specialization.
Still, performances like his latest one, and now a historic scoring record, continue to make his case harder to ignore. Mac McClung has nothing left to prove in the G League. Now the all-time leading scorer and one of the league’s most decorated players, he has built a portfolio that demands attention. The only question left is whether or not it will finally translate into a real, lasting opportunity in the NBA.
