When will Luka Doncic return? Lakers star still not cleared as recovery timeline comes into focus
The Los Angeles Lakers were dealt some grim news ahead of Game 2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder as Luka Doncic reveals his return timeline.

The timeline is becoming clearer, and unfortunately more concerningm for the Los Angeles Lakers. Luka Doncic revealed this week that he was initially given an eight-week recovery timeline after suffering a Grade 2 left hamstring strain on April 2.
Luka Doncic: “I’m just doing everything I can… The doctor said 8 weeks at the beginning of the first MRI, so I’m just going day-by-day and I feel better every day” 👀🪄

As the Lakers head into Game 2 of their playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, just over five weeks have passed, and he still hasn’t been cleared for full contact.
Where Luka Doncic is in his recovery
Doncic has taken steps forward, but they remain limited. He told reporters he has resumed running, a key milestone in hamstring rehab. However, he has not yet been cleared for contact, which is typically one of the final hurdles before returning to game action.
For a player with Doncic’s workload and style of play, full contact clearance is essential. Without it, a return, especially in a playoff setting, is unlikely.
What the 8-week timeline really means
A Grade 2 hamstring strain is not a minor injury. The typical recovery window for this type of strain often falls in the 6-to-8-week range, depending on severity and response to rehab. Doncic’s own admission that he was given an eight-week timeline suggests the Lakers are targeting the more cautious end of that spectrum.
If that timeline holds, a realistic return would fall closer to late in the series (Game 5–6 range) or potentially beyond, if the Lakers are eliminated early At just five weeks into recovery, Doncic appears to still be in the ramp-up phase, not the final stage.
Can Luka Doncic return sooner?
There’s always a possibility, but it comes with risk. Hamstring injuries are notoriously easy to re-aggravate, especially if a player returns before regaining full strength and explosiveness. Doncic relies heavily on change of pace and physicality, so rushing back could lead to a setback that extends beyond this series.
That’s why the Lakers have taken a cautious approach so far, even as the stakes rise.
What this means for the Lakers vs. Thunder
The timing couldn’t be worse. The Lakers are already down 1-0 to a well-rested Thunder team and now face the reality of potentially playing multiple games without their best player.
Even in the best-case scenario where Doncic returns later in the series, there’s no guarantee he’ll be at full strength. And without him, the margin for error shrinks dramatically.
