Update:

Milwaukee’s season could be set for an instant turnaround this weekend if Giannis Antetokounmpo takes the court against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night. The two-time MVP has been sidelined for over a fortnight with a right calf strain, but reports quoting team insiders now expect him back in the lineup once he passes pre-game fitness tests.

Antetokounmpo’s injury occurred in early December during the game against the Detroit Pistons. The issue was identified as a calf strain, and initial scans ruled out more serious concerns. At the time, the Bucks estimated an absence of two to four weeks, but what initially looked like a relatively short layoff soon stretched into eight missed games.

During his absence, Milwaukee have struggled to find consistency. Without Antetokounmpo’s contributions, the Bucks have managed only two wins in eight games.

Will Giannis play on Saturday?

Bucks’ coaching staff are likely to proceed with caution. Even if cleared, Giannis is expected to play on a restricted minutes schedule as the club eases him back into full action.

Despite Milwaukee’s record dropping down to 12-19, Antetokounmpo’s presence still gives the Bucks a significant boost. Over 17 games this season before the injury, he was averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists on an efficient shooting split.

Beyond his fitness, this moment also offers a chance to tackle a broader narrative about Antetokounmpo’s future with the Bucks. Throughout the current stretch, trade rumours have swirled around the NBA regarding his long-term fit in Milwaukee, yet nothing official has materialised. Paul Reidy of AS writes: “While the Greek player hasn’t requested a trade yet, many league executives believe that if he refuses to sign an extension this summer, the Bucks will be forced to move him to avoid losing him for nothing in 2027."

The Milwaukee Bucks take on the Chicago Bulls on Saturday 27 December. The game is set to take place at 8:00 p.m. ET and will be played at FedExForum.
