The death of Detroit Shock
A year after the WNBA was founded in 1998, the league decided to add more teams with the Detroit team being called Shock. Nancy Lieberman was the team’s first head coach, and the team reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in her second year.
Success was slow in coming but eventually former Pistons player Bill Laimbeer in his capacity as head coach steered the team to the first of three WNBA championships in 2003. Unfortunately, the franchise moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2009 and since 2016, the Dallas Wings have taken their place in the league.
