Following an unlucky blow on court, the Serbian will now miss the rest of the tournament, and what’s worse is that he had to have an operation as well.

While basketball is not the most gentle of sports, the fact that he will now have to lose an organ suggests that what happened to him may have been excessive. With that said, one can only hope for his speedy recovery now.

Serbia’s Borisa Simanic to have kidney removed

According to reports, Serbian forward Borisa Simanic is now set to miss the remainder of the 2023 FIBA World Cup after undergoing an operation to remove his kidney. Sadly, the surgery was deemed necessary after Simanic appeared to take an elbow to his midsection during Serbia’s game against South Sudan on Wednesday, a contest which the 25-year-old and his team won 115-83. Where the injury specifically is concerned, it was in the closing moments of the game when Simanic was defending against South Sudan’s Nuni Omot under the basket. Omot appeared to hit the big Serbian with an elbow as he attempted to make space for himself. The effect was immediate as Simanic grabbed his midsection before crouching in visible pain.

After being taken to the hospital, emergency surgery was performed, which of course brings us to Sunday’s disturbing announcement in which the organization indicated, that Simanic had experienced complications and would require a second operation to remove his kidney. “Due to complications on the injured kidney that occurred in the postoperative course, Boriša Simanić was operated on again on September 3. Due to changes in the vitality of the kidney tissue, the entire kidney had to be surgically removed. We expect and wish that after this operation, the postoperative course will go smoothly,” said the Serbian team’s medical staff. It is understood that Simanic will have to remain in the hospital in the Philippines.

South Sudan’s Nuni Omot apologizes to Borisa Simanic

To his credit, South Sudan’s Noni Omot was openly remorseful about his part in the incident when asked about it on Thursday, the day after the game. “I heard that he ended up going to the hospital,” Omot said. “My apologies, I didn’t mean to make no type of a dirty play. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I pray for you, you’ll be in my prayers. I’m not a dirty player, I’ve never been a dirty player,” Omot continued. “From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely apologize to everyone that’s watching and to the player especially.”

One of the tournament favorites, Serbia will be back in action on Tuesday, September 12th, when they face Lithuania in the quarterfinals.
