Kevin Durant has been acquired by the Phoenix Suns in a blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets. Here is the breakdown of his contract and salary.
Just days after the Brooklyn Nets traded Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, Kevin Durant has been traded to the Phoenix Suns in another shocking trade deal.
Durant had asked for a trade during the offseason and the Nets looked, but eventually decided to try to make it work together instead after failing to find a deal that gave them sufficient draft picks. But once Irving was out, the certainty of Durant’s future was up in the air from that moment. He had followed Irving to the Nets in 2019.
“I’m just praying for his happiness and his well-being,” Irving said after his Mavs’ debut. “We had a lot of conversations through the year about what our futures were going to look like. There was still a level of uncertainty. We just cared about seeing each other be places that we could thrive. ... This business changes so quickly. He’s getting a little bit older. I’m getting a little bit older. I just love the competition now that we can be in the same conference, and I welcome all of that. … I’m just glad he got out of there.”
Durant will join Suns stars Devin Booker, Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton in Phoenix. At the moment, Durant is out with an MCL sprain, but is expected to return after the All-Star break.
Durant’s contract details
In 2021, Kevin Durant signed a four-year, $191 million extension which kicked in this season, so he’s got three years left on his contract. He’s now earning $43 million plus a $1.1 million incentive. He has a contract until the 2025-26 season with no player option in the final year. He’ll earn $46.4 million next season plus incentives of around $1.25 million. By the 2024-25 season, Durant will be one of the highest-paid players in the NBA with a salary of $49.9 million.
By the final year of the contract, he’ll be making $53.3 million and will have an incentive of $1.4 million.
