Update:

Less than a month on from their triumph in game seven of the NBA Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder are already making important moves in the offseason.

On Wednesday it was announced that the Thunder have agreed a deal to tie down Chet Holmgren on a new long-term deal. ESPN reports that Holmgren is set to sign a fully guaranteed five-year maximum rookie contract that could reach $250 million.

Holmgren was a key part of the Thunder team that clinched a championship last season, saving some of his best moments of the postseason. In the all-important game seven against the Indiana Pacers, Holmgren recorded five blocks as Oklahoma ran out 91-103 winners.

ESPN’s NBA Insider Shams Charania explained: “After missing three months during the season, Holmgren returned in February and came back stronger to help lead OKC and its young core to the NBA title. The Thunder will now move toward locking in All-NBA superstar Jalen Williams, who has momentum in his rookie extension talks.”

If they are able to tie down Williams as well it will represent a successful offseason for the Thunder front office. Last week the team announced a new four-year deal worth $285 million for reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Holmgren, Williams and SGA were all starters for the Thunder in game seven. If all three can be signed to new deals it looks like Thunder will be set up for a strong season as they search for a repeat championship.

In 2024/25 the young team racked up 84 wins through the regular season and playoffs, the most by an NBA champion since the Chicago Bulls in 1996/97. The Thunder also recorded the best regular-season points per game differential (+12.9) in the history of the NBA, highlighting their status as a truly great champion.
