Timberwolves expose Spurs’ inexperience in Game 1 battle
Minnesota’s playoff experience proved decisive as they edged San Antonio in a tight opener despite Wembanyama’s all-around performance.

The new-era San Antonio Spurs, led on the court by Victor Wembanyama and from the bench by Mitch Johnson, had already shown signs of vulnerability in the previous round. That series included the concussion suffered by their French superstar, which shook things up against the Portland Trail Blazers. Beyond that, they asserted their superiority and closed it out in six games, but it came against an opponent that also lacked playoff experience, something that tends to be exposed at this stage.
This round is a different story. The Spurs are now facing the Minnesota Timberwolves, a team that has built a strong identity over the past four years under Chris Finch, with Anthony Edwards as their centerpiece. That foundation has taken them to back-to-back Western Conference Finals, and that experience was evident in Game 1.
The Timberwolves looked more seasoned, better prepared for the fight, and sharper in key moments. They stole home-court advantage at the AT&T Center right away, taking a 0–1 lead with a hard-fought 102–104 win. It was a back-and-forth contest that feels likely to repeat throughout a series that promises both intensity and quality.
For the Spurs, even a triple-double from Wembanyama wasn’t enough. The cornerstone of their present and future finished with 11 points, 15 rebounds, 12 blocks, and 5 assists, impacting the game across the board. Still, the key detail was how much freedom he was allowed. Minnesota’s defensive scheme rose to the challenge of containing a one-of-a-kind player, and that effort went a long way toward deciding the outcome.
The Wolves also welcomed back their most important piece, Edwards, who had missed two games with a left knee hyperextension. Minnesota had already come through a grueling series against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, eliminating them while dealing with injuries. Donte DiVincenzo is out for the season, while Ayo Dosunmu could return soon. Physicality, usually one of their strengths, worked against them at times, but they managed to adapt and push through.
There were several key contributors for Minnesota. Julius Randle led with 21 points, while Naz Reid posted a +15 during his minutes. Mike Conley added 12 points with his usual steady presence, and both Jaden McDaniels and Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 16. Edwards came off the bench and played limited minutes (25), finishing 8-of-13 from the field with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. On the Spurs’ side, rookie Dylan Harper led the scoring with 18 points.
For San Antonio, this series must be seen as a crash course in playoff experience. They are learning in real time what it takes to survive in a battle that could define a run to the Conference Finals. Elsewhere, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers are competing for the same goal, awaiting the possible return of Luka Doncic.
This first game reflected that learning curve. The Spurs had a chance to win on a fast break where execution failed, but even in that moment, they showed resilience and an understanding that better opportunities will come. Julian Champagnie ultimately had the shot that could have sealed the victory.

Wembanyama’s record 12 blocks will draw plenty of attention, but it also highlighted the growing pains of both him and this young Spurs team. That’s not a concern so much as a sign of where they are in their development. Minnesota’s defensive approach was excellent, forcing him into 5-of-17 shooting and 0-for-8 from beyond the arc through constant double teams and quick help rotations.
The game itself was tightly contested, tied at 45 at halftime. Edwards paced himself carefully, testing his knee after the previous series. Early in the fourth quarter, a burst from the Spurs, featuring a three from Stephon Castle, a Wembanyama block on Edwards, and a fast break by De’Aaron Fox, seemed to swing momentum their way.
Minnesota responded immediately with a 2–14 run, capped by a corner three from Conley, and regained control. San Antonio fought back once more, cutting the deficit to four in the final minute after Wembanyama powered in a dunk to reach double figures.
The closing moments were tense. Rookie Harper made a key defensive play alongside Devin Vassell to force a turnover, giving the Spurs one last chance at 102–104. Julius Randle missed a contested shot, and Wembanyama hesitated without calling a timeout. With five seconds left, the ball swung to Champagnie on the right wing. He pump-faked, then released a rushed attempt that came up short. The pressure got to him.
Even so, it was a great game, and one that suggests many more like it are still to come.
