Update:

The San Antonio Spurs are headed to the 2026 NBA Finals, and one of the most intriguinh parts of the story is the player who’s leading them there.

Wemby’s addiction

After eliminating the Oklahoma City Thunder in a grueling Game 7, Victor Wembanyama revealed something deeper, something that could shape not only this Finals matchup, but the trajectory of his career.

“I found resources inside of me… relentlessness,” Wembanyama said. Then came the line that stood out: he admitted that pushing himself at this level might already feel like an “addiction.”

Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals was a defining moment. Wembanyama delivered at an elite level throughout the series, earning Conference Finals MVP honors while going head-to-head with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the league’s reigning MVP. Over the course of the matchup, Wembanyama showcased the full spectrum of his game, impacting scoring, rebounding, and rim protection in ways few players can replicate.

But what stood out most was the composure and adaptability under pressure, something Wembanyama himself acknowledged as a revelation. He spoke about overcoming “hurdles that… could get so high”, signaling that this postseason has pushed him into new territory mentally as much as physically.

There’s also a clear edge driving Wembanyama forward. After finishing behind Gilgeous-Alexander in MVP voting, the Spurs star used that result as fuel. That motivation showed throughout the Western Conference Finals, where he elevated his play and, at times, outperformed the league’s top individual honoree.

Chasing history at 22

Wembanyama’s rise is already placing him in rare company. By leading San Antonio to the Finals at just 22 years old, he joins a short list of players who reached the championship stage this early in their careers. Names like Magic Johnson, LeBron James, and Shaquille O’Neal highlight how uncommon this level of impact is at such a young age.

What separates Wembanyama, however, is the speed at which he’s stacking accolades. Already a unanimous Defensive Player of the Year and now a Conference Finals MVP, his career is expanding at a pace that invites comparisons to generational talents.

As the Spurs prepare to face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, Wembanyama’s mentality could be the defining factor. Talent alone doesn’t win championships, especially against the Knicks, who are riding momentum and playing with confidence. But a player who embraces pressure, seeks out challenges, and thrives on pushing limits can easily make the difference in the series.

If Wembanyama’s “addiction” to relentlessness is real, it may be exactly what San Antonio needs to maintain its edge.m Perhaps the most striking part of Wembanyama’s comments is what they suggest about the future.

“I want to do that 15, 20 more times,” he said, referring to competing at this level. It’s an ambitious statement, but one that reflects a mindset rarely seen, even among elite players.

Now, the focus is on the 2026 NBA Finals. But if this postseason is any indication, Wembanyama is just getting started.
